DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security ( DHS) Science and Technology Directorate sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) Disciplines. The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals. It is open to undergraduate and graduate students in a broad spectrum of HS-STEM Disciplines and DHS mission-relevant Research Areas. The ultimate goal of the program is to engage a diverse, educated and skilled pool of scientists and engineers in HS-STEM areas and to promote long-term relationships between students, researchers, DHS and research facilities to enhance the HS-STEM workforce.

ORISE/HOMELAND SECURITY
2015 HS-STEM SUMMER INTERNSHIPS

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now accepting applications for its 10 week Summer Internship Program in a broad spectrum of research areas.  These internships are open to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in homeland security disciplines related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM). Undergraduate and graduate students receive a stipend of $6,000 and $7,000, respectively, plus limited travel expenses

Research experiences are offered at: Argonne, Berkeley, Livermore, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, and Sandia National Laboratories; as well as at Homeland Security Studies and Analysis Institute, Coast Guard Research and Development Center, Customs and Borders Protection Laboratories and Scientific Services, Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Engineer Research and Development Center, National Security Technologies Remote Sensing Laboratory, Naval Research Laboratory, and Transportation Security Laboratory.

Areas of Research: Engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological/life sciences, environmental science, emergency and incident management, social sciences, and more.

Bioprocess Engineer

Microbial Discovery Group (MDG) in Franklin, WI seeks a highly motivated BioProcess/Process Engineer to work in our Bioprocess Development Department.

Key responsibilities include internal or outsourced projects related to:

  • Work in a collaborative environment with other biotech specialists for the execution and analysis of fermentation, freezing, freeze drying and other downstream process development experiments within the scope of company projects, goals and KPIs.
  • Operation and basic maintenance of pilot fermentation, freeze drying, analytical equipment and instrumentation. 
  • Collaborative creation of SOPs and processes for existing and new processes.
  • Scaling-up new fermentation and freeze drying processes from pilot scale to manufacturing
  • Preparation of process samples for application or customer evaluation
  • Evaluation and improvement of experimental methods and techniques to increase yield efficiency and productivity.
  • Analysis and presentation of processing experimental results for those involved with bioprocess manufacturing
  • Identify and implement process innovations that will increase product yield, equipment reliability and overall process performance.
  • Keeping up to date on current literature and trends in the state of the art of fermentation, freeze drying and downstream processing
  • Helping to maintain the frozen microbial culture program

Qualifications

MS in Biochemical, Chemical, Bioprocessing, Process Engineering or other related bioprocessing field ideally with fermentation, bioreactor or lyophilization emphasis of study or a BS in similarly related field with 2-3 years hands on experience with fermentation, bioreactors or lyophilization.

  • Strong mechanical ability a must.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and computer skills required.
  • Ability to contribute to collaborations that result in innovation of new commercial bioprocesses.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs occasionally and do some hands on work with process equipment when needed

Total Compensation

  • Salary commensurate with experience and position fit
