OSTP Internship Program

The Office of Science and Technology Policy is currently accepting applications for its Summer 2014 Internship Program.The Office of Science and Technology Policy advises the President on the effects of science and technology on domestic and international affairs. The office serves as a source of scientific and technological analysis and judgment for the President with respect to major policies, plans and programs of the Federal Government. Interns are accepted for one of three annual terms (Spring, Summer, or Fall), which each last no more than 90 days. While these positions are without compensation, the assignments provide educational enrichment, practical work experience, and network opportunities with other individuals in the science and technology policy arena. Aquatic Chemistry Ecology REU

Aquatic Chemical Ecology (ACE) at Georgia Tech is a summer research program supported by the National Science Foundation REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program. Savannah River Remediation (SRR) Summer Internship

Each year, SRR selects students through an application process to participate in a three-month long internship program with the SRS liquid waste contractor. ASCE Scholarship opportunity

The American Society for Civil Engineering (ASCE) will aware a scholarship to a junior or senior majoring in Civil Engineering or a related field who has demonstrated a commitment to either water supply and/or Environmental Engineering. Deadline: February 10th, 2014

Remote Policy Internship for AWWA

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) has conducted several of drinking water policy projects through summer interns in its Washington, DC Office over the past several years. This year, AWWA is adding Remote Policy Interns who would remain at their home universities for the summer and be paid a stipend of $3,000 for working approximately 10-12 hours per week over the summer on drinking water policy projects. AWWA would contract directly with the Interns. The Interns can either develop a policy analysis project that is based on their ongoing research at their home institution or conduct a separate policy analysis project that is of interest to the applicant and useful to AWWA. The goal of the remote internship to submit a paper on the results of the policy research to the Journal - American Water Works Association. Publication of the results of the policy research would be the successful outcome of the internship. Proposal Deadline: March 7th, 2014

Ecosystem Restoration through Interdisciplinary Exchange (ERIE) REU Program

The ERIE-REU, sponsored by the NSF, provides the opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct interdisciplinary faculty-mentored research on a diverse array of projects related to ecological restoration of aquatic systems. Students involved in the ERIE-REU program will receive one-on-one mentoring in the conduct of environmental research, focused training in environmental and professional development topics, and exposure to a variety of research methods. The program includes weekly group meetings to share research progress, and culminates with a symposium in which each student will present his/her research findings in oral and poster formats. In addition, students will participate in social events and field trips highlighting ecosystem restoration efforts and the environment of western New York and the lower Great Lakes region. Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program, sponsored by the Office of Fossil Energy (FE), U.S. Department of Energy, is now accepting applications for a10-week summer internship. MLEF’s mission is to improve opportunities for women and minority students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, but all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. The program allows students to apply their academic achievements to actual research while gaining hands-on experience. Eligibility ranges from sophomores to post-docs. Selected MLEF Fellows will receive a bi-weekly stipend, approved travel costs to/from their host site and will attend a Technical Forum to present their project at the end of the internship Date: January 15th, 2014

USF Field School Opportunity in Costa Rica

For the past 13 years, the Department of Anthropology at the University of South Florida has offered the “Globalization and Community Health Field School” in collaboration with the Monteverde Institute in Costa Rica. The field school is unique in its interdisciplinary approach that brings together the fields of Anthropology and Civil & Environmental Engineering to address health related issues in rural Costa Rica. Students receive intensive cross-disciplinary training in quantitative and qualitative methods and conduct guided field research while living with local Costa Rican families. Note that Spanish proficiency is required. There are two concurrent programs: one for undergraduate students, which is supported by an NSF REU grant, and one for graduate students. The NSF-REU covers most program expenses and offers participating undergraduates a weekly stipend. Date: February 5th, 2014
