Consider a degree in Environmental Engineering at Clemson. You can be part of the solution. Our complex world faces many challenges, including contaminated water supplies, hazardous wastes, increasing populations and limited resources. We need a highly trained workforce ready to tackle our environmental problems and design a healthier and more sustainable society. As an environmental engineer, you can help solve many of the environmental problems faced by society through the use of the principles of biology, chemistry, and the earth sciences. An undergraduate degree in environmental engineering opens the door to a variety of rewarding career options.

Environmental Engineers:

This technical and challenging program is led by world-class faculty dedicated to providing the best possible educational experience. Clemson University’s new undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering is the only degree program of its type in South Carolina.

Local, national, and international job opportunities in environmental engineering abound. Careers can be found with the federal and state governments, water utilities, engineering consulting firms, and industry. Environmental Engineering has been continuously reported as one of the best jobs with great pay and growth prospects in many recent news articles: Money Magazine, IEEE-USA Today's Engineer, The Consumerist, US Department of Labor, and Csemag.com. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment for environmental engineers will grow faster than average for 2006 through 2016 [1]. As of 2008, average salary for environmental engineers was $77,970. By receiving a degree in Environmental Engineering at Clemson, you will acquire the skills necessary to join this rapidly growing field and tackle some of the major challenges facing society.

Environmental Engineering Student Outcomes

Upon completion of the Environmental Engineering program, a student will be prepared to enter into the workforce confident that he has mastered the skills necessary to succeed.

Graduates of the program will have:
  1. an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  2. an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  3. an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability

  • basic sciences - mathematics, physics and chemistry
  • engineering sciences - statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics
  • environmental engineering analysis and design courses
  • applied life sciences - biology, microbiology, and organic chemistry and electives selected based on the student's interests.

EES 2010 Environmental Engineering Fundamentals I 3(3,0) Overview of topics and engineering application areas that comprise the environmental engineering profession. Significant emphasis is given to development of oral and written communication skills needed by the engineering professional and application of engineering fundamentals to environmental systems. Preq: CES/ENGR 1020 with a C or higher; MTHS 1080; CH 1010. Coreq: ENGR 1410

EES 2020 Environmental Engineering Fundamentals II 4(3,4) Overview of fundamentals related to environmental engineering processes, including water treatment, wastewater treatment, solid and hazardous waste management, air pollution control, risk assessment, and pollutions prevention strategies. Laboratories cover measurement techniques and applications to process engineering. Preq: EES 2010, CH 1020, ENGR 1410 with a C or higher.

EES 4010, 6010 Environmental Engineering 3(3,0)Introduction to the field of environmental engineering. Topics include environmental phenomena, impact of pollutants in the aquatic environment, solid-waste management, air pollution control, radiological health and simple water and wastewater treatment systems. Coreq: CE 3410 OR CHE 2300 OR ME 3080 or consent of instructor

EES 4020, 6020 Water and Wastewater Treatment Systems 3(3,0) Study of fundamental priciples, rational design considerations, and operational procedures of the unit operations and processes employed in water and waste treatment. Both physiochemical and biological treatment techniques are discussed. Introduces the integration of unit operations and processes into water and waste treatment systems. Preq:EES 2020 or 4010; or consent of instructor.

EES 4030 Waste and Waste Treatment Laboratory 1(0,3) Laboratory exercises to accompany EES 4020 in selected water and wastewater treatment operations and processes. Emphasis is on understanding of fundamental principles and operational use of experimental data in engineering design applications, and writing of engineering reports. Coreq: EES 4020 or consent of instructor

EES 4100, 6100 Environmental Radiation Protection I 3(3,0) Fundamental principles of radiological health and radiation safety. Topics include radiation fundamentals, basic concepts of environmental radiation protection, internal and external dosimetry, envrionmental dose calculations and radiation protection standards. Preq: Consent of instructor.

EES 4110, 6110 Ionizing Radiation Detection and Measurement 3(2,3) Laboratory exercises in ionizing radiation detection and measurement. Topics include nuclear electronics; counting statistics; radiation interactions; basic gas, scintillation, and semiconductor detectors; gamma-ray spectroscopy; health physics survey instrumentation; and termoluminescent dosimetry. Preq: EES 4100 oo EES 6100 or consent of instructor.

EES 4300, 6300 Air Pollution Engineering 3(3,0) Introductory courses in air pollution and its control. Topics include air pollutatnts and effects, sources, dispersion models, engineering controls, and air-quality legislation. Preq: EES 2020 or Senior standing in engineering or physical sciences or consent of instructor.

EES 4500 Professional Seminar 1(1,0) Covers various topics related to skills and techniques for evaluating career opportunities, seeking and obtaining environmental engineering employment, career development, professional registration, professional ethics, and other factors necessary for achieving success in a professional career. Course enables students to make decisions that will help them succeed in their careers. Preq: Senior standing in Environmental Engineering.

EES 4750 Capstone Design Project 3(1,6) Students apply creativity and their engineering knowledge to solve open-ended environmental engineering problems. Problems are formulated and solutions are evaluated by faculty and practicing engineers. Oral and written communication skills are developed through presentations, correspondence and project reports. Preq: Senior Standing in Environmental Enigneering.

EES 4800, 6800 Environmental Risk Assessment 3(3,0) Quantitative estimation of human health risk posed by the release of a contaminant to the environment. Topics include methods for analyzing emission rate, environmental transport, exposure and health effects; methods of uncertainty analysis; and the roll of risk assessment in environmental regulation and environmental decision making. Preq: EES 2020 or EES 4010 or consent of instructor.

EES 4840, 6840 Municipal Solid Waste Management 3(3,0) Introduction to the problems, regulations, collection, handling, recycling, and disposal of minucipal solid wastes in the urban and rural sectors. Emphasizes and integrated waste-management system with resource recovery, composting, incineration, landfill disposals, and their costs. Preq: EES 2020 or Senior standing in engineering or science or consent of instructor.

EES 4850, 6850 Hazardous Waste Management 3(3,0) Introduction to the problems, regulations, treatment, and ultimate disposal of hazardous and toxic materials. Spill cleanup, groundwater transport, land disposal, incineration, and treatment technologies are discussed. Preq: EES 2020 or consent of instructor; CH 2010 or 2230.

EES 4860, 6860 Pollution Prevention and Industrial Ecology 3(3,0) Topics include pollution prevention technology, the role of pollution prevention within a corporation, source reduction and recycling assessments, treatment to reduce disposal, life-cycle assessment, design for environment, and industrial ecology. Emphasizes case studies. Preq: Junior standing in College of Engineering and Science or consent of instructor.

EES 4900, 4900 (HON), 6900 Special Projects 1-3(1-3,0) Studies or laboratory investigations on special topcs in the environmental engineering and science field. Arranged on a project basis with a mazimum of individual student effort and a minimum of staff guidance. May be repeated for a mazximum of three credits. Consent of Instructor.

EES 4910 Selected Topics in Environmental Engineering 1-3(1-3,0) Study of the dunamic role of environmental engineering in maintaining environmental quality. A comprehensive study of any phase of environmental engineering. May be repeated for credit, but only if different topics are covered. Consent of department chair.
