Centennial Oak

University Facilities Landscape Services is pleased to announce that our Clemson Centennial Oak has been awarded the TREESSC 2009 Heritage Tree Award. In addition to this honor, the Bur Oak also holds the title of The Largest Bur Oak in South Carolina.

It is important to understand that the State Champion Quercus macrocarpa is four feet shorter than it was in 1988 and is over mature. We will continue to give it as much care as we can but as with all living things, enjoy it and appreciate it for today.

To ensure arbitrary decisions are not made on a tree with so much valuable history, we have three resources that we consult with and acquire recommendations from:  The Laurus Group (Don Ham), Bartlett Research Laboratories (Tom Smiley) and Clemson University's plant pathologist (Steve Jeffers). See below for more information on maintenance of the Bur Oak.

Maintenance history:

  • Bartlett Tree Experts treated soil for deficiencies
  • Bartlett Tree Experts performed soil sample testing

  • Installed a Water Mark soil moisture monitoring system that allows Landscape Services to water the tree more effectively
  • Installed two support cables to help support a scaffolding limb that has a structural defect

  • Doubled the area of root invigoration and saw the tree put out a flush of growth

  • Performed root invigoration treatment as well as treatment with Profile growth regulator and saw some slowing of decline

  • Treated with Profile growth regulator after tree exhibited symptoms associated with decline but no improvement was shown

  • Installed lightning protection

Routine maintenance procedures:

  • Annual treatment of systemic soil-injection insecticide to help control an outbreak of damaging insects - as an over mature tree in decline is more susceptible to this type of damage
  • Fungicide drenches and fungicide bark sprays made when needed to keep damaging soil fungi in check
  • Annual inspections of tree structure, lightning systems and support cables
  • Soil amendments when soil analysis reveals the need
  • Annual crown clean down to 3/4 inch diameter
