The Nonprofit Leadership Minor prepares and trains Clemson students for leadership positions in the expanding nonprofit sector through an 18 credit online program.
The NPL Minor is designed for Clemson students to achieve core nonprofit competencies that will enhance their career opportunities in a variety of nonprofit fields.
The faculty who teach in the NPL minor are currently professionals working in the public and private sectors who bring a depth of experience and expertise to the online virtual classroom. Students will benefit from the real-life examples and practical scenarios that faculty draw upon to illustrate concepts and principles in the non-profit world. The online courses provide flexibility to students who need an alternative to traditional in-class schedules. The Preceptor course adds an additional element of hands-on experiential learning in which a student interns with a local non-profit organization, applying theory to praxis and gaining valuable on-the-job experience.
Students must complete all 18 credits as outlined below to receive the minor. Courses are offered either in the fall or spring semester as indicated in the descriptions below, with the exception of NPL 4900, in which students can enroll during any semester after completing NPL 3000 as a pre-requisite.
NPL 3000* (Fall) Foundations of Non-Profit Leadership (3)
Foundational knowledge and understanding of non-profit organizations, their development, governance, maintenance and operations within modern society.
NPL 3010* (Spring) Understanding Stakeholders for Non-Profit Organizations (3)
Comprehensive review of marketing strategies and communication techniques suitable for and available to non-profit organizations. Material will cover basic services marketing tactics including use of media through advertising, public service announcements, promotional events and partnership degvelopment as well as approaches to copy writing, public speaking and working with local and regional governments.
NPL 3020* (Fall) Funding and Accountability in Non-Profit Organizations (3)
This course will prepare students to understand and participate in the fiscal management of non-profit organizations. The focus will be on understanding, producing, interpreting, and communicating financial information to staff, board members, volunteers and other stakeholders. Credit for this course may only count toward the completion of the NPL minor or certificate program.
NPL 3030* (Spring) Personnel Leadership in Non-Profit Organizations (3)
This course will introduce students to the principles of personnel leadership as related to paid, un-paid, seasonal, and employees of non-profit organizations. Recruitment, selection/hiring, retention and motivation, and evaluation as it pertains to the non-profit sector and its unique blend of paid and unpaid workers will be discussed. Credit for this course may only count toward the completion of the NPL minor or certificate program.
NPL 3040* (Fall) Risk Management of Non-Profit Organizations (3)
Conceptual and practical aspects of risk and legal issues associated with non-profit organizations. Foundational knowledge of the non-profit organization as a legal entity including risk identification, management, transfer and financing, liability, and ethics. Credit for this course may only count toward the completion of the NPL minor or certificate program.
NPL 4900* (Fall/Spring/Summer) – Preceptorship in Non-Profit Leadership (3)
Practical experience in non-profit operations and management. Under the guidance of a qualified professional supervisor, the student will apply theories, concepts, philosophies and techniques acquired in the course material in a non-profit organization. The preceptorship with the cooperating non-profit organization encompasses diverse experiences in operations and management to maximize the professional development of the student.
