Like many individuals on campus, the students in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management (PRTM) participate in intramural sports. Yet for these PRTM students it is not just a sport and a good time; you can say they actually practice what they preach, or in this case, practice what they study.
Students in PRTM study how recreation and leisure affects individuals’ lives and the community they live in. This Fall semester, PRTM has put together a flag football team roster consisting of 17 PRTM graduate students, two PRTM undergraduate students, and one mechanical engineering student.
Much of the inspiration for this year’s season stems from PRTM professor and 2010 Clemson Convocation speaker, Dr. Fran McGuire. McGuire has taught and made his mark on every PRTM student on the team. His famous classroom statements act as their inspiration.
Dr. Francis McGuire
Dr. Fran McGuire preaching and practicing.
One McGuire phrase enthusiastically claims, “It’s not what the kid does to the ball, but what the ball does for the kid,” emphasizing the importance of the benefits and outcomes of participation in recreation and leisure and not necessarily whether you win or lose.
McGuire is also known for pleading, “Come on people!” during lulls in classroom discussions to motivate his students. As a tribute to the motivation McGuire provides in the classroom, the front of the t-shirts display the quote “Come on people!” written on the front as a reminder to stay motivated and continue to contribute to the team whether on the field or off.
Above the quote is a picture of Dr. McGuire catching a Frisbee in mid-flight at Cornell University in 1972. The back of the t-shirt reflects their team name, Let’s Park and Recreate, encouraging team members, opponents, and spectators alike to be active and reap the benefits of recreation and leisure.
You can see the PRTM team play flag football on Tuesday nights at 8:15 pm on the intramural fields next to Fike Student Recreation Center.
