The School of Nursing and U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Unit combined expertise to provide medical training for Navy corpsmen. The U.S. Navy Reserve team, led by LT Marybeth M. Hendricks, DNP and Officer-In-Charge, Catherine O. Durham, DNP, envisioned medical training that would offer complex, real-life training for their reserve corpsmen.
They felt that their corpsmen would provide better care for injured service men and women if the training was designed in a realistic setting with hands-on application. The U.S. Navy Reserve corpsmen are required to complete competency training on basic assessment skills, hemorrhage control, medication administration, and venipuncture.
LT. MaryBeth M. Hendricks is previous graduate of the nursing program at Clemson University. She obtained her Bachelor’s in Nursing in 1995 and Master’s in Nursing as an NP in 1996. She had the opportunity to experience the Clemson University School of Nursing Clinical Lab and Resource Center (CLRC). The center offers a state-of-the-art learning environment that incorporates cutting-edge education, health care and communications technologies.
The center provides an environment that closely simulates real-life experiences, multiple teaching approaches and learning styles. Working in collaboration with Dr. Tracy Fasolino, Assistant Professor and Lead Facilitator for the project, the team designed a 5-hour simulation session using high-fidelity human patient simulators. These simulators are highly sophisticated, technologically advanced mannequins that can be programmed to realistically mimic the symptoms of almost any Traumatic Amputation Field Scenario. health problem, including many illnesses, injuries and age-related changes.
The training session was completed by the Navy Reserve Medical Unit during their scheduled drill weekend. With the assistance of several nursing faculty members, some with prior military experience, the collaboration was overwhelming successful. The School of Nursing faculty involved with the simulation session included Dr. Tracy Fasolino, Assistant Professor and Simulation Facilitator, Dr. Rosanne Pruitt, Director and Associate Dean, Dr. Deborah Willoughby, Professor and Undergraduate Coordinator, Dr. John Whitcomb, Assistant Professor, Mrs. Catherine Murton, Lecturer, and Mrs. Portia Botchway, Senior Lecturer.
The corpsmen were highly engaged in the simulation sessions and scenarios. Many of them offered positive comments to the team such as “Excellent class. Best training we have did as a unit.” The lead facilitator and U.S. Navy team are preparing for the next collaborative session scheduled for March, 2013 and look forward to the future efforts by the School of Nursing and U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Unit.
