Academic Affairs Council
The Academic Affairs Council is committed to creating and maintaining a wholesome and effective learning environment where academic excellence is emphasized.
The major responsibilities of the Academic Affairs Council include academic planning and accountability, curriculum development and deployment, academic policies and priorities, articulation agreements, state, national, and specialized accreditations, long-ranging planning and strategic leadership.
Members of the Academic Affairs Council are the Vice President of Academic Affairs, academic department chairs, and the registrar.
Cowley College Vice President of Academic Affairs
As the Chief Academic Officer of the college since May 2008, Slade Griffiths is responsible for providing leadership for the academic and instructional programs at all college locations, online education, library, and the adult education program.
In 1996, Griffiths created a paramedic program for the college and in 2005 he established the Allied Health Department and Center in Winfield. As Director of EMS education and department chair of the Allied Health Department, he was instrumental in growing the Allied Health Center to one of the most successful departments of the college.
Griffiths has received numerous state and national awards, including Academic Achievement, N.I.S.O.D. Master Teacher, Who's Who Among America's Teachers, and Outstanding Instructor/Coordinator. He continues to teach in the Cowley College Leadership program.
He has a Master’s degree in Education from Southwestern College and obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Friends University in Human Resource Management.

Associate Vice President for Mulvane & Online Operations
After serving as Associate Dean of Online and Outreach Education from 2012 to 2014, Stephani Johns-Hines assumed the position of Associate Vice President. Johns-Hines has worked for Cowley College as a part-time instructor since 1995. The quote, “Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire.” by W.B. Yeats is one that she feels reflects her passion and commitment to higher education. Johns-Hines' professional background includes more than 12 years in the legal field, a wide base of experience in online instructional platforms, as well as textbook review and development. She holds a Master’s degree in Educational and Instructional Technology from National University in San Jose, California and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Kansas State University.

Department Chair, Health & Human Services
Chris Cannon serves as the Department Chair for Health & Human Services and the Director of the Allied Health Center.
Cannon graduated from Cowley’s first MICT program in 1997 and returned as a full-time MICT instructor in 2005. In 2008 he assumed responsibilities for Department Chair. With over 13 years of EMS experience, he brings an intimate understanding of many different EMS systems to the classroom. Chris is also the Director of Coop Education and Dislocated Workers programs at the college.
He received the N.I.S.O.D. Master Teacher award in 2007 and the college’s Young Achiever Award in 2007.
Cannon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Southwestern College and a Master's degree in leadership from Southwestern College.

Department Chair, Humanities
Marlys Cervantes has been at the College since 2000 and currently teaches creative writing, literature and composition classes.
While at Cowley, she has earned the Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence and NISOD Master Teacher Award, as well as the Tiger Booster of the Year 2004. Cervantes was Cowley’s commencement speaker in 2007.
Prior to coming to Cowley, she taught composition at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where she earned her Master’s degree in English, with an emphasis in contemporary Native American literature.

Department Chair, Career and Technical Education
Joe Clasen was appointed department chair in the summer of 2013. He has been the Director of Nondestructive Testing at Cowley since 2007. Clasen is recognized as among the best in his areas of expertise.
Clasen has an AAS from Cowley College, Bachelor Studies from Pittsburg State University, and Masters Degree Studies, Southwestern University
His real-world experiences include Wichita Aerospace Spares, Cessna Aircraft Company, Hawker Beechcraft, Inspection Services, and Mistras Services.

Department Chair, Business, Computer, & Information Technology
Rae Dale was appointed department chair in the summer of 2013. Since 1992 Rae Dale has served as an instructor in the Business, Computers & Information Technology Department teaching Computer Applications courses.
Her degrees include an Associate of Arts from Cowley College, a Bachelor of Arts from Southwestern College, and a Master’s of Education from Southwestern College. She has completed additional coursework through Emporia State University, Wichita State University, and Kansas State University.

Devin Graves has been at Cowley College since 2006 as Director of Adult Education Programs. While at Cowley he has secured over $1.2 million in grant awards. He was appointed Registrar of the College in September, 2014.
Graves also teaches Computer Applications face-to-face and online.
Graves holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Southwestern College, A Master of Business Administration from Southwestern College, and a Master of Science in Adult Occupational and Continuing Education from Kansas State University.

President of Cowley Education Association and Instructor in the Natural Science Department
Scott Layton has been employed with Cowley since 2002 and teaches Principles of Biology, General Biology, Microbiology, and Undergraduate Research. While at Cowley, he has earned the Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence, NISOD Master Teacher Award, and Stirnaman Award for Teaching Excellence. He currently serves as the Cowley Education Association President and Phi Theta Kappa cosponsor.
Layton is currently ABD in Environmental Science with an emphasis in Ecotoxicology from Oklahoma State University after completing his MS in Curriculum and Instruction and BS in Science Education there as well.

Todd Shepherd has been at Cowley College since 1999 as a macroeconomics, microeconomics, math, and astronomy Instructor, and became Department Chair in 2002.
Shepherd received the NISOD Master Teacher Award 2002 and the Who's Who Among America's College Teachers.

Dr. Michelle Schoon
Department Chairperson, Natural Science
Dr. Schoon has been associated with the college since 1990 and became department chair in 1997. She continues to be an instructor in biology, anatomy and physiology.
Dr. Schoon received the Stirnaman Award for Teaching Excellence (2005-2006); Who's Who's Among American College Instructors(2001,2002,2004,2007); Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence (2000-2001); and NISOD master teacher award (1996).
Dr. Schoon earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biology education from Bethany College, her Master’s degree in curriculum and Instruction from Wichita State University, and an Educational Doctorate from Southwestern College..

Director of Academic Enrichment
Janice began her Cowley College career in 1991 as an assistant to the Endowment Association director when the capital campaign was launched to build the Brown Center. She was promoted to Director of Continuing Education and became part of the Academic Affairs department in 1997. She currently serves as the Director of Academic Enrichment and provides support and oversight to academic operations within the college. Concurrent enrollment, scheduling, non-credit enrichment activities, and assisting with hiring and training of instructors are some of her areas of responsibility.
Janice received the Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development in May, 2000. During her time at Cowley she has worked on many quality initiative teams and presented at a number of national conferences.
She holds a Masters of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Wichita State University, a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Kansas State University, and an Associate of Arts degree from Colby Community College. Her husband, Tad, is an insurance and real estate agent and partner at Samford-Stover Agency in Arkansas City. They have two adult daughters, Andrea and Stacia.

Administrative Assistant for the Instruction Office
Mindi Shriver has been with the college since 1990, and has been Administrative Assistant for the Instruction Office since July 2002. Her duties include: assisting the Vice President of Academic Affairs and the Director of Academic Enrichment; serving as secretary for the Academic Affairs Council; performing receptionist, correspondence, clerical and filing duties; assisting faculty and students in routine matters; maintaining records and distributing teaching materials to part-time instructors; maintaining evaluation, personnel, absence, posted hours and other required records for all instructional staff; maintain records as required by the Kansas Board of Regents.
