Timeline for Transfer Students

Freshman Year:

  1. Focus on taking your general education core classes. Follow the transfer and articulation agreement course requirements from the college catalog. If your major requires a specific sequence of courses, begin that sequence your first semester.
  2. Explore majors: Your choice of major could narrow your list of transfer institutions. The Discover Program is a helpful tool to research majors. Contact Charlee Wilson for a token number to access the Discover Program.
  3. Keep your advisor informed. Let your advisor know when you have decided on a transfer institution or if you decide to change your major.
  4. Research transfer schools. Use the internet and the Discover program; talk with advisors, family and friends.
  5. Attend transfer student visit days or go on a campus visit at 4-year institutions. Be sure to ask to speak with a representative in your chosen academic area!
  6. Sign up for email list serves and request general information from the Admissions Offices of the 4-year institutions you are interested in.
  7. Keep your grades up. Many 4-year schools have minimum GPA requirements.
  8. Participate in college activities to increase your chances of admission into specific colleges or programs.

Summer:

  1. Take a couple of courses if you are running behind schedule. You want to get that Associate’s degree before transferring!
  2. Visit the transfer school(s) you want to attend if you haven’t already done so.

Sophomore Year (1st semester - fall):

  1. Narrow down your potential transfer schools to your top two choices. Make follow up contacts with academic advisors in your field of study and/or Admissions and Financial Aid.
  2. Complete a dual advising form for the 4-year institution you are interested in (some colleges do not have this service).
  3. Submit the application for admission to the school(s) of your choice.

Sophomore Year (2nd semester – spring):

  1. Make the final decision on your transfer college.
  2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The priority deadline is March 1 st. Follow up with the college until your FAFSA application is complete.
  3. Submit a scholarship application. Many Kansas schools have a NOVEMBER PRIORITY deadline.
  4. Look at housing options and turn in a residence hall contract if you decide to live on campus.
  5. Register for classes. The Regents colleges in Kansas have transfer enrollment days in April. You must be admitted to the college before attending an enrollment day. Don’t forget to take a copy of your Cowley transcript with you to your enrollment appointment.
  6. Go to Cowley’s Registrar’s office and arrange to have your official CCCC transcript sent to your transfer institution as soon as you graduate.
