Cowley EMS Education Newsletter

Fall 2002

Cindy Branscum, Lead MICT Instructor ------------------ Slade Griffiths, Program Director

Accreditation Update
As mentioned in the summer newsletter, Cowley is seeking EMS education accreditation from the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions.

The committee's primary goal is to foster partnership with educational programs in continuous quality improvement. The secondary goal is to certify that a program meets the standards of quality that are expected for EMS education. The accreditation process also exists to provide institutional administrators an external audit of the quality of the program. We have always welcomed this process.

When Cowley started the MICT program in 1996, accreditation standards were used in the development of the program though official accreditation was not sought. Starting in 2000, the program has been moving towards official accreditation. The first step, a self-study, was completed, sent and accepted by the committee. This 1000 page study documents all aspects of our EMS programs.

We had our accreditation site visit in late August and did very well. The final step, a vote by the full accreditation committee, will occur in February 2003. We are confident that our program will become accredited by the committee and that our reputation for providing excellence in MICT education is accurate.

This experience, although very time consuming and challenging, has been a positive experience for the EMS faculty.

EMT Classes
We have two EMT classes currently in progress. One is in Mulvane which is being taught by Dixie Simpson and the other is in Winfield and is being taught by Cindy Branscum These students come from a variety of backgrounds and are welcomed to the EMS community.

MICT Program - Class of 2002
Students from our sixth MICT program are in field internship -- something they've wanted for many months. They have worked very hard during this year and all of the work is paying off: they are rapidly becoming entry-level MICTs. Students are completing the internship experience at Butler County EMS and Sedgwick County EMS. Both of these EMS organizations are truly making a difference for these students. We thank both of these fine services for all their help.

Fall Schedule
PHTLS Class -- Winfield (October 3-4)
EMS Recertification -- Winfield (November 16-17)
EMS Recertification -- Mulvane (October 18-20)

Small ACLS Classes in Wichita Area
ACLS - We have been conducting small ACLS classes in the Wichita area. Those who have attended this class have really enjoyed the format. If interested in a class of this type, please call Randall Smith at (316) 383-7776 for information.

MICT Program - Class of 2003
Our seventh MICT program starts on January 6, 2003. It will be nice to have another full class.

Need Patches from Graduates
We thought that it would be a great idea to create a frame of patches from all our graduates. So, if you are a graduate of any of our Cowley programs, please send a patch to us. We would really like to have your current (or past) organization represented here. Thanks in advance for making this possible.

We just started this campaign and do not have many service patches -- E-mail the director if you wish to check on the services which have already responded.

Good Luck!
Good luck to former adjunct faculty members Nick Billings and Richard West. Nick has moved to Arizona to work as a paramedic and Richard is now working at the Wichita Police Department as an officer.

Let Us Know
If you desire any form of specialized training, please let us know. We can develop classes to meet your needs.

New MICT Adjunct Faculty
We would like to welcome Chet Ranzau and Jason Newberry to our MICT teaching staff. Both are Cowley MICT graduates and each have been BLS adjunct faculty in the past. Chet works full time at Arkansas City Fire Department as an MICT/Firefighter and Jason works full time at Wellington Fire Department as an MICT/Firefighter. They each bring a wealth of experience in EMS and firefighting and are a welcome addition to our professional teaching staff.

Congratulations!
Congratulations to Heidi Bloyer and Craig Isom, both Cowley graduates and adjunct faculty, who were recently married. Congratulations also to other EMS adjunct faculty members: Chris Cannon who became a Training Officer I and PALS instructor, and Chet Ranzau and Brandon Russell who also both became PALS instructors.

At Cowley, your quest for EMS education is given our full attention by competent and skilled faculty members.
