Dan J. Spangler
Henrietta Olvera Duran and Dan J. Spangler will be honored at Cowley County Community College’s 69th Commencement of May 9, 1992.

Henrietta Duran resides in Pretty Prairie, Kan., where she has owned and operated the Wagon Wheel Restaurant for more than 33 years.

She has been very active in her community, church, and city government. In 1985, she was a write-in candidate for city council and was the first woman elected to city government in Pretty Prairie. She is currently serving her third term as councilwoman until 1995.

Dan Spangler was born and raised in Arkansas City. After graduating from Cowley in 1952, he entered the U.S. Air Force and served 3 1/2 years in Texas and Georgia. Following his service in the Air Force, Dan returned to Ark City, joined the Reserves, and began working at Day’s Monument Company. Twenty-six years ago he became a partner in the monument company and has for the last several years been sole owner and operator.

Dan is a member of the Kansas-Oklahoma Monument Builders of America and has served as secretary, treasurer, and as president of the Board of Directors. He has served the city of Ark City as past chairman of the board of Zoning Appeals and has served on the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce. He also has served as president of the Ark City Kiwanis Club.

Dan has been a district committeeman for the Boy Scouts of America. He is a life member of the VFW and the American Legion. Dan attends the Presbyterian Church, and his hobbies include fishing and woodworking. Dan is married to Jan Spangler and they have one daughter Denah, son-in-law David Colburn, and granddaughter Kiersten.

We are proud to honor Dan J. Spangler as an Outstanding Alumni of the Class of 1952 for his continued involvement in community activities.

There will be a reception following Commencement for outstanding alumni, other honored guests, the 1992 graduating class and their families in the Nelson Student Center.
