To audition for a scholarship you will perform one memorized piano solo and technical requirements on March 2, 2011 for priority consideration. Other dates are available by appointment.
Recital/Scholarship Performance Requirements:
You will perform one memorized piano solo from standard classical repertoire, between 3-5 minutes in length. You will be asked to play major scales and arpeggios (2 octaves minimum, hands together). You will also be given a simple piece to sight read during the audition. If intending to be music major, a theory placement test will be given to each student individually.

Music opportunities at Cowley College include vocal and instrumental performance groups, including the Cowley Concert Choir, Cowley County Singers, Band, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, a professional-quality stage musical and talent shows. This wide range and variety of music allow the student many opportunities to perform on and off campus, as well as in events across the state and beyond.
If you are a music major, Cowley College will give you a solid background in all of the core music classes so you can successfully transfer to a four-year institution. Your piano studies here will prepare you for solo performance, accompanying and further studies in music. If you're not a music major, there are still many opportunities for you to perform as part of a group or on your own.
Meet Dr. Gloria Tham
Gloria Tham
About Dr. Tham:
Born in Kampar, Malaysia, Tham started piano lessons at age five. She graduated from Southwestern summa cum laude in 2002, with a degree in piano performance. Her teacher was Dr. Timothy Shook. She holds the Performer's Certificate in Piano from Trinity College – London. After graduating from Southwestern College, she spent a year as a graduate teaching assistant at Kansas State University. Tham then transferred to Wichita State University where she finished her masters of music degree in piano performance, studying under Dr. Andrew Trechak. She taught class piano and applied piano at Wichita State.
In August 2009, Tham graduated with a doctorate in piano performance from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She studied under Dr. Noel Engebretson and taught music appreciation and world music at the university. She also studied abroad as a Chinese language student at the Central University of Nationalities, in Beijing, China in the fall of 2008.
Tham’s research and performance interests are in Chinese piano music and orientalism in Western piano literature. She was invited to present her paper on the Western use of the Chinese folksong, “Jasmine Flower,” at the Great Plains Chapter College Music Society meeting in 2005. Her dissertation was on the influence of Socialist Realism in Chinese piano music during the Cultural Revolution under Chinese history professor, Dr. Anthony E. Clark.
Besides performing, she is also involved in music ministry, accompanying, teaching and adjudicating. She has volunteered, performed and presented lectures in Thailand, China, Singapore and Malaysia. She is a member of the Music Teachers National Association and the College Music Society. In addition to music, she is an avid contra and ballroom dancer, and enjoys photography, reading and traveling.
