Cowley freshman places second in newswriting category
It was just the second story Andrea Iman had ever written for The Cowley Press, the student newspaper at Cowley County Community College. But that didn't matter.
Iman's front-page story titled "Worth the Risk? Humanities division cracks down on plagiarism," earned her a second-place award in the Best of the Midwest College Newspaper Convention contest presented by the Associated Collegiate Press. Iman received her award Feb. 29 during the convention in Minneapolis, Minn.
Iman, the daughter of Doug and Barb Iman of Elkhart, is a freshman majoring in business. She joined the staff of The Cowley Press this semester. She also plays left field for the Lady Tiger softball team.
Iman's story appeared in the Feb. 12, 2004, edition. She beat out student journalists from several major universities, including Notre Dame, Minnesota and Wisconsin, in the newswriting category.
The Cowley Press also won an award. It placed second among two-year schools who entered the contest. David Bostwick is the adviser.
Iman, a 2003 graduate of Elkhart High School, served as yearbook editor her senior year. She is attending Cowley on an academic-athletic scholarship.
Iman's award-winning story centered on Cowley's Humanities Department, which recently adopted turnitin.com to help combat plagiarism.
