Cowley selects students to be ambassadors for next academic year
Twenty-one students have been selected to represent Cowley County Community College as Student Ambassadors for the 2004-2005 academic year.
Kristy Gottlob, admissions team representative and sponsor of the group, said the task of trimming the list of students to 21 from the record 137 who were nominated was not easy.
“It was so hard this year,” she said. “We had to reject a lot of great students.”
Student Ambassadors must be full-time Cowley students with a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average or higher. Gottlob said the student’s involvement also was a consideration in the process.
“We also take a look at what classes they’re in, because this is a demanding position,” Gottlob said. “And we take into consideration how many times a student is nominated, because a lot of the students were nominated by several people.”
Ambassadors are required to work two hours per week in the Admissions Office, performing various tasks, including answering the switchboard, giving campus tours, or making photocopies. They also are required to work special events such as New Student Orientation, Senior Day, Phone-a-Thon, Principal-Counselor Day, and Cowley’s College Planning Conference.
“We track their hours,” Gottlob said. “We have a computer set up for them in the ambassador room where they clock in and out. That’s how we measure their time for awards.”
Each year, the Admissions Office develops a theme that is carried out throughout the academic year. This year’s theme was the 50s. The theme for next year is Life By Design.
“We choose 21 students because there are three of us (admissions team representatives),” Gottlob said. “We divide the students into three teams and have a friendly competition throughout the year.”
Amy Crain and Ben Schears are the other Admissions Team Representatives. Next year, Gottlob’s team will be called the Designers, Crain’s team the Landscapers, and Schears’ team the Architects, all going along with the chosen theme.
“We try to incorporate the theme with everything we do throughout the year,” Gottlob said. “Each year, the Ambassador program has grown. My first year, we had 43 nominations and we chose 15 students. My second year, we had 64 nominations and we chose 21.”
Students chosen for the 2004-2005 academic year. They are listed in alphabetical order with their high school and hometown (if different).
