Everhart’s “Oceans of Kansas” to be featured at the National Book Festival

Cowley College adjunct instructor Mike Everhart was recently informed that his book “Oceans of Kansas” has been named the featured book from Kansas for the National Book Festival.

This means that on the list of all the state Centers for the Book, besides Kansas the book will be featured in all the publications that list it. These publications come out from or are posted by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

The 2006 National Book Festival will be held Sept. 30 in Washington, D.C. http://www.loc.gov/bookfest/.

"I was honored and very pleased to hear that my book, Oceans of Kansas, had been chosen to represent Kansas at the 2006 National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.,” Everhart said. “I appreciate the opportunity to share some of the history of paleontology and the scientific discoveries that have come from our state. They are just a few of the many things we have to be proud about in Kansas."

Everhart has been busy since the end of the spring semester as he is helping make a National Geographic IMAX movie about fossils from western Kansas. He was on location for a portion of the movie that was filmed in western Kansas and Lawrence in mid-June. The film will be released in October, 2007.

Everhart has enjoyed the opportunity to help with the film.

"I have been working with National Geographic for several years on the "Sea Monsters" IMAX film project, it has been interesting to be able to use my knowledge of paleontology to make the film more accurate, both scientifically and historically,” Everhart said. “I hope the film crew and actors learned as much about paleontology as I did about movie making."
