Johnson named Cowley's April Student of the Month

Johnson named Cowley's April Student of the Month
With a desire to help people, Cowley College sophomore Alexis Johnson can be seen helping students as a tutor and student ambassador at the college. She can also be found helping individuals at Arkansas City’s Presbyterian Manor, where she works as an activities assistant and a nurses aid.

Her hard work in and out of the classroom has not gone unnoticed as she was recently named Cowley College’s April Student of the Month.

“I am extremely surprised and happy,” Johnson said. “It is quite an honor.”

Johnson, the daughter of Alvin Johnson and Shelinda Morris, is a nursing major from Arkansas City. She has two brothers, Mario 23, and Jordan 10. Grandparents are, Angeline Morris, Marion Hollins and Alvin Johnson Sr. of Arkansas City.

At Cowley, she serves as the Phi Theta Kappa Chapter President, Black Student Union secretary, and a tutor for the Underground and Impact. She also is a student ambassador and a member of the Math and Science Club.

She has excelled academically at Cowley as she is on the National Dean’s list and is a member of the Who’s Who Among American Junior College students. She has an overall grade point average of 3.5.

She has been able to combine her academics with work outside of the college as she has worked at Presbyterian Manor since she was a junior in high school. She helps plans events and participates in activities with the individuals at Presbyterian Manor.

“I have wanted to be a nurse ever since I was real young, so I thought working there would help prepare me for that,” Johnson said. “I love helping people. At my job I get to hear a lot of people’s life stories and enjoy hearing about their experiences.”

Although she stays busy on and off campus, she still finds time to attend campus activities as well as spend time with her family and friends.

At Cowley, she has enjoyed learning from Natural Science Department instructors Pam Smith and Melinda Neal.

“Pam is so sweet and always made me feel like I was really smart,” Johnson said. “Melinda has been great also.”

After Cowley, she plans to transfer to the University of Kansas to obtain her nursing degree.

“I have not been far away from home, so I thought KU would be a good school to go to,” Johnson said.

She hopes to begin a career in the nursing field once she is done with school.

“I really want to travel and maybe be involved in travel nursing,” Johnson said.

Having grown up in Ark City, Johnson was hesitant about staying at home to attend Cowley. However, now that her time at the school is nearing the end, she is glad she made the choice to come to Cowley.

“I didn’t want to come to Cowley at the beginning, but I really feel I made a good decision to come to school here,” Johnson said. “It really helped me get my basic education stuff out of the way and I have had a good time here. It has gone by really quick.”
