Cowley instructor to speak, have film show at WSU exhibit
As part of Wichita State University’s exhibit titled “Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln’s Journey to Emancipation”, Ken Spurgeon, Cowley College director of instructional services, will be a guest speaker and have a documentary viewing of the film he wrote/produced titled “Touched by Fire: Bleeding Kansas" June 10 from 2-4 p.m. at Wichita State University’s Ablah Library.

Forever Free is a traveling panel exhibit that reexamines President Lincoln's efforts towards the abolition of slavery during the Civil War. Organized by The Huntington's John Rhodehamel, Norris Foundation Curator of American Historical Manuscripts, the exhibit consists of reproductions of rare historical documents from The Huntington's collections and those of the Gilder LEHRMAN Institute, and draws on the latest scholarship in the field.

Dramatic re-enactments of incidents in Bleeding Kansas history make up Spurgeon’s documentary about Kansans, two-belief systems-freedom and slavery, and Kansas’ significance in U. S. history of the time.

The Battle of Black Jack, the massacre along Pottawatomie Creek, territorial elections, and John Brown’s hanging following the Harpers Ferry raid are among the scenes portrayed by local re-enactors.

Spurgeon also helped organize some of the events that will take place during the exhibition, which runs from May 5-June 15. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

A grand opening reception will be held Saturday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. For more information visit http://library.wichita.edu
