Cowley students take part in Skills USA competition
Skills USA competition
Eleven Cowley College students represented the school at the Skills USA competition held April 19 at the Wichita Area Technical College-Grove campus.
Seven of the 11 Cowley students were from the college’s Mulvane campus, while the other four were from the Ark City campus. Brian Haden serves as the Skills USA advisor for the Mulvane chapter, and Brett Butler is the advisor for the Ark City chapter.
The competitions at Skills USA consisted of Automotive Service Technology, Automotive Parts Specialist, Precision Machining, and Welding Technology.
Skills USA competitors are made up of students attending high school, community college, technical school or a vocational program. Participants had to have a resume to compete in the contest, which was chaired by local business and industry experts in that field.
“No matter how they did in the contest they got a chance to meet local business and industry individuals,” Butler said. “It was also a good opportunity for them to meet other students from all over the state that are seeking the same degree or studying the same curriculum.”
Skills USA serves as the club for Cowley’s Career and Technical Education Department. Membership in the club has grown to 34 students on the Mulvane and Ark City campus.
Several of Cowley’s students did well at the competition. However, Butler feels the students will do even better the next year.
“We are going to figure out how to get better,” Butler said. “With the quality of students we have, we expect to be more successful. Next year, they will be really prepared through another season of training and practice.”
