Cowley instructors honored at NISOD International Conference
Cowley College instructors Tom Mason, Chris Cannon and JoLynne Stalnaker recently received Excellence Awards from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development in Austin, Texas.
The NISOD annual International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence was held Sunday through Wednesday at the Austin Convention Center. The convention consisted of morning and afternoon workshops. The event was capped by an awards ceremony where the NISOD recipients were honored.
“It was great to go and represent our peers at Cowley,” Mason said. “It’s a good feeling to know all the work you put into Cowley and education is acknowledged.”
Mason, who is in his fifth year at Cowley, serves as the college’s communications director on the main campus in Arkansas City.
Cannon is a MICT instructor at Cowley’s Allied Health Center in Winfield, while Stalnaker is an instructor in the Business, Computer and Information Technology Department on the Arkansas City campus.
Usually Cowley’s administration selects just two NISOD individuals to receive the NISOD Excellence Awards.
“This year we chose three because all three individuals were all so absolutely outstanding,” Cowley Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs Sheree Utash said. “All three have contributed so much to the college, in and out of the classroom. They are each outstanding educators that make decisions based on what is best for the student.”
Along with serving as the college’s communications director, Mason is also an advisor and the Media Club Sponsor of Tyger Tawk. He teaches Introduction to Broadcasting, Introduction to Public Relations, and Radio Practicum. He also serves as the director of the Children’s Theatre program at Cowley.
“I encourage any faculty member that has never gone to the NISOD conference before to partake in this great event,” Mason said.
Cannon has been an adjunct faculty member since 1998, and is now a full time MICT instructor at Cowley. He co-teaches the evening MICT program with Slade Griffiths. This includes lectures, coordination of laboratory experiences and assistants, writing/grading homework, quizzes, and tests, coordination of PALS, PHTLS, ACLS, NRP, and BLS classes for certification, scheduling guest lecturers and outside instruction of WMD, HAZMAT, and vehicle extrication, serving as a clinical coordinator at hospitals, contacting and assigning field internship preceptors, and reporting student progress.
Stalnaker, who recently resigned after spending 18 years at the college, taught Business Communications, Computer Applications, Medical Terminology, Keyboarding, Personal Finance, and various other Office Technology courses. She also served as an advisor for undecided students, business students, and office technology students.
Along with all of this, Stalnaker also served on the Academic Advising team and was instrumental in developing the mentoring program that was implemented in the fall of 2006 for new hires.
