Cowley’s aviation maintenance program continues to grow

Now in its third year of existence, Cowley College’s aviation maintenance technician program has seen its enrollment grow from 24 students in 2004-05 to 175 students in 2006-07. aviation tech center
“It has grown considerably,” director of aviation programs Noel Gary said. “I think the biggest reason for the growth of the program is the opportunities it opens up for the individual.”
Eighty two percent of the graduates from Cowley’s aviation maintenance technician training program have been placed in local jobs, while others have gone on to work at locations around the United States.
The 18-month to two-year general education program is certified by the Federal Aviation Administration and teaches students about airframe and power plant mechanics. Students in the AMT program receive instruction in forty-five different subject areas specified by the FAA. By satisfactorily completing Cowley’s program, students would then be eligible to take the oral, written, and practical exams for the three subject areas, which are general subjects, Airframe I and II, and Powerplant I and II.
The program plans to be taught in an $18 million aviation technical center within Sedgwick County’s new technical education center, which is slated to open at Col. James Jabara Airport in late 2009 or early 2010.
