Cowley A/C class gives free inspection to college employees
Cowley A/C class gives free inspection to college employees
In honor of Automotive Professionals Week the Cowley College Automotive Service Technology department provided a free automotive heat/air conditioning inspection clinic to Cowley faculty and staff on Wednesday.
This clinic was held at Cowley’s Mulvane Center from 8-11 a.m. and at the Arkansas City campus from noon to 3 p.m.
“All of the students were very excited about the opportunity to be involved with the clinic,” Cowley automotive instructor Mark Grant said. “I hope to make the A/C clinic an annual event for the program, and possibly offer other clinics to the list in the future.”
Students in the A/C class conducted preliminary performance tests of individual’s air conditioning systems, where they verified compressor engagement, measured outlet duct temperature, and sensed temperature changes across the air conditioning components. They then determined the appropriate action to take.
The students also conducted an air conditioning performance test, checked the air conditioning duct temperature and ambient temperature.
They then verified the operation of the air conditioning compressor. If the compressor engaged, they would use a laser thermometer to check the compressor outlet, condenser inlet temperature, condenser outlet temperature, evaporator inlet temperature, evaporator outlet temperature, and the compressor inlet temperature.
The students accomplished assigned NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) task sheets during the inspections. Following the inspections, the information gathered was communicated to the customers for scheduling of the recommended repairs if needed.
“I would like to communicate my appreciation for those who participated by bringing their vehicles in for the clinic,” Grant said. “I feel that the exposure to the various models, and real-world issues that the students encountered were very valuable.”
