Dopfel named October
Student of the Month

Student Government Association president Krista Dopfel has been named Cowley’s October Student of the Month.

“It is a big honor and nice to get that recognition,” Dopfel said. “It kind of reaffirms how hard I have worked.”

Dopfel, the daughter of Bruce and LeeAnn Dopfel, has an older brother, Nicholas, 21, that is a senior at Kansas State University, and a sister, Sierra, 14, that is a freshman at Belle Plaine High School. Grandparents are, Fred Dopfel of Marietta, Ga., and Oleta Salek of Oklahoma City, Okla.

Dopfel, a bio chemistry major, was the class valedictorian at Belle Plaine High School and was the school’s Student Council vice president. She was also involved in the National Honor Society and numerous other clubs.

Dopfel, who posted a 4.0 grade point average at Belle Plaine High School, received an academic scholarship to come to Cowley. At Cowley she has a 3.89 grade point average and has been on the President’s and Dean’s Honor Roll for two years, despite taking some challenging classes. Her ‘optional electives are Chemistry, Trigonometry, Physics, and Statistics.

Dopfel has enjoyed learning from Cowley instructors such as Michelle Schoon, Pam Smith and Jafar Hashemi. She originally had visions of becoming a doctor, but thought the position would be too time consuming. So, she decided she wanted to be a physicians assistant.

“I think being a physicians assistant would be a better balance,” Dopfel said. “I love science so much, it just comes natural to me.”

At Cowley, Dopfel serves as the Student Government Association president, vice president of the College Republicans, and is involved in Phi Theta Kappa, Mu Alpha Theta, Math and Science Club, Chess Club, and intramurals.

“I like to be involved and hang out with people,” Dopfel said. “I also want to be a physicians assistant and you have to be active and show leadership to get into that program.”

Away from her on campus involvement, Dopfel is involved in the Mulvane United Methodist church, and enjoys playing the piano.

“I just like the idea of sitting there by myself and letting my mind wonder, and just playing to whatever I feel,” Dopfel said.

After graduating from Cowley, Dopfel plans on transferring to Wichita State University where she will major in Biochemistry.

However, for now, Dopfel is going to enjoy her final year at Cowley.

“I am so happy I came to Cowley,” Dopfel said. “Everything has turned out so well, I could not be more pleased.”
