Cowley College employees and Pizza Hut raise $750 for cancer fund

Pizza Hut night
With the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Cowley County to be held Friday at Cowley College’s Track and Field Complex, Cowley College employees and the Arkansas City Pizza Hut Wing Street teamed to raise additional donations for the event.

Cowley employees worked as servers and greeters at the Wing Street Pizza Hut in Arkansas City from 4 p.m. to close Friday. All tips and a portion of each dining room order were donated to the Relay for Life fund for cancer.

Sue Saia, vice president of student affairs at Cowley College, who contacted Pizza Hut manager Jeff Hettenbach earlier this year about partnering for this event, said $750 was raised for the cancer fund.
“I want to thank Jeff Hettenbach and his staff for their patience,” Saia said. “I also want to thank all of the Cowley College supporters and employees that came to help or eat at Pizza Hut that night.

Cowley employees that worked as servers or greeters were, Steve Eck, Bev Grunder, Janet Kennedy, Sally Palmer, Sue Yoachim, Shannon Massey, Rama Peroo, April Nittler, Deb Nittler, Slade Griffiths, Sue Saia, Tom Saia, Patty Mugler, Greg Mugler, Todd Clark, Dr. Pat McAtee, Libby Palmer, Kristi Shaw, Jody Arnett, Margaret Neal, Shayla McDonald, Rikki Hettenbach, Michelle Knoles, Jeff Fluty, Michelle Kelly, Melissa Hollister, and Mark Phillips.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Cowley County will run from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The event honors cancer survivors, pays tribute to the lives lost to the disease, and raises money to help fight it. Gates open at 6 p.m. Friday for set-up. Speakers begin at 7 p.m. followed by the Survivors Lap.

Teams will then take a group lap around the track prior to individual walking. Around 9 p.m. corporate sponsors will be recognized. Lighting of the luminaries will be at approximately 10 p.m.
