Chemical and Radioactive Waste Disposal

Chemical and radioactive waste generated in laboratories and by support services is subject to both Federal and State regulation. At the University of Florida, all chemical and radioactive waste disposal must be managed in accordance with policies of Environmental Health and Safety.

Chemical and Radioactive Waste Disposal staff  within EH&S provide training, technical support and compliance assistance for all University of Florida faculty and staff who generate waste.

Notice of EPA Updates to Hazardous Waste Regulations

Recent Changes to the United States EPA and State of Florida DEP hazardous waste generator regulations will impact the University of Florida operations wherever hazardous waste is generated. The objectives of the Hazardous Waste Generator Improvement Final Rule are to streamline the current hazardous waste regulations and to enhance environmental protection by providing greater clarification of and in some cases strengthening requirements for management of hazardous waste (mandatory changes). In some cases, the new rules may provide greater flexibility in hazardous waste management (optional changes).

The federal rule changes took effect June 1st, 2017.  The rule changes will not take effect in Florida until the state legislature adopts the federal rule. By law, the state of Florida must adopt all mandatory changes no later than June 1, 2018. At this point in time, the state has indicated no earlier timeline for adoption or enforcement.  In light of this open time frame, the University of Florida will immediately begin a phased implementation of these changes in order to achieve compliance prior to State of Florida adoption.

Impacts to operations should be minimal as most rule changes are not “wholesale” but rather clarifications or extensions of existing rules.  The other mitigating factor will be that many of the new requirements (i.e. equipment, infrastructure, etc.) are currently in place. The rule changes will impact University of Florida operations throughout the state, both on and off-campus.

Details of the rule changes and impacts to University of Florida operations are detailed in the Notice of EPA Updates to Hazardous Waste Regulations and at the following updated EH&S websites:

Hazardous Waste Labeling Requirements

Hazardous Waste Satellite Accumulation Area Requirements

Hazardous Waste Monthly Self Audit Form
