Richard A. Matasar (Dean, 1996-1999)
Richard Matasar, former dean of the Chicago-Kent College of Law and Associate Dean at the University of Iowa, became dean of the University of Florida College of Law in 1996. As Matasar’s term began, the growth in faculty and students was beginning to outstrip the facilities of Holland and Bruton-Geer halls, and the library’s holdings exceeded the capacity to shelve them. Matasar led the effort to raise funds for new facilites for the law school. During Matasar’s tenure, the International Center for Automated Information Research (ICAIR) was created with a $5 million gift to provide grants in the areas of law, accounting, and financial services, UF law alumnus Fredric G. Levin made a gift of $10 million to the law school, which was renamed the Levin College of Law, and the law school raised $2.5 million from other donors for a new law school building. Matasar returned to full-time teaching at UF in 1989 and is currently dean at New York Law School.
