Orlando Intellectual Property Conference Features Former U.S. Patent Office Director

ORLANDO, Fla. – James E. Rogan, immediate past director of the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and former Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property, will be keynote speaker here Friday at the third annual Law & Technology Conference organized by the University of Florida Levin College of Law.

Rogan will speak at a noon luncheon, sponsored by Feldman Gale & Weber of Miami, at the Radisson Plaza. The event kicks off at 8 a.m. with morning sessions devoted to corporate and transactional issues, internal protection of trade secrets / noncompete agreements / employment issues, and the Internet music wars.

Rogan stepped down from his dual post this January after being sworn in to head the USPTO and as under secretary in December 2001. During his tenure, he launched a five-year program assessed by the U.S. House of Representatives as “calling for some of the most sweeping changes to the patent review process in 200 years.”

Rogan was a member of the U.S. House 1997-01, became California’s youngest sitting state court judge in 1990, was presiding judge of what is now the Los Angeles Superior Court, and was a gang murder prosecutor in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. President George W. Bush nominated him in May, 2001, to the USPTO post.

Afternoon conference topics will include ethical issues and E-discovery, and international intellectual property issues. Speakers for the day’s sessions are private and corporate attorneys from New Jersey, Illinois and multiple Florida cities.

The annual law and technology symposium is made possible by financial support of Saliwanchik Lloyd & Saliwanchik of Gainesville, which has endowed the UF law school’s intellectual property program – the only one of its kind in the southeast.
