The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Graduate Fellowship Program provides up to nine graduate student scholarships each year, covering full tuition and fees (insurance is not included) for the student's graduate program. The Program is administered by the John D. O'Bryant African-American Institute.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an accomplished scholar who exemplified the utmost qualities of leadership. In keeping with the high standards exemplified by Dr. King, recipients of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Graduate Fellowship should be of African origin, demonstrate high standards of leadership, and have a record of community service.

1. What is the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Graduate Fellowship Program?

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Graduate Fellowship Program provides up to nine graduate student scholarships each year, covering full tuition and fees (insurance is not included) for the student's graduate program. The Program is administered by the John D. O'Bryant African-American Institute.

2. Who is eligible? 

Recipients must be Northeastern University students of African origin who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. They should also show evidence of:

  • Outstanding academic performance at the undergraduate level.
  • Leadership ability as indicated by participation in community service activities.
  • Strong personal references

3. How does one apply for the MLK Fellowship?

To be considered for the MLK fellowship, applicants must:

  • Apply to and be accepted into a Northeastern University graduate program*
  • Apply for financial aid through the University's Office of Financial Aid.
  • Complete and submit an official Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Graduate Fellowship Application along with an official undergraduate transcript.
  • Complete and submit a personal statement. 
  • Have three personal reference letters mailed to the John D. O'Bryant African-American Institute.
  • Attend a personal interview.

* We only accept applications from a University approved, full-time Master's degree program and references should come from an employer or professor.

4. How many applicants are selected each year?

Each academic year, up to nine graduate students may be selected.

5. What costs are covered by the Fellowship?

The scholarship covers full tuition and general fees for the student's graduate program.

6. When are award notifications given?

Notifications are sent to recipients immediately after the MLK Selection Committee has made its decision. Decision dates are contingent upon applicant's acceptance into a graduate program at Northeastern.

7. Is there a deadline for applying?

Yes, the 2014-2015 application is due by
Wednesday May 15, 2014
