2013-2014 Sabbatical Leave Proposal Format, Timeline and Cover Sheet

Purpose of Sabbatical Leave:

1. The University recognizes two main purposes for sabbatical leave:

  • To provide for the professional growth of the faculty.
  • To promote the faculty's academic contribution to the University.

2. The College recognizes sabbatical leave as a special opportunity to reward faculty who are working toward advancing goals of the University, College and their unit.

General Criteria:

1. Faculty member must be tenured to be eligible for Sabbatical leave.

2. Contribution to University Life: Those individuals who have contributed most to development of their unit and/or the University through scholarship, outstanding teaching, and such activities as service on committees, and the development of new programs should be given priority.

3. The scope of the work to be done during sabbatical leave should be consistent with the goals of the University, College and unit as well as the amount of time requested for the sabbatical leave.

4. The proposal should reflect a compelling rationale for the need of the sabbatical leave to accomplish the work in a given year.

Specific Criteria:

1. Research or Scholarship:
A leave for the purpose of research or scholarship should lead to publication or presentation of research papers, or submission of a major grant, a book, or clinical innovation. This category could include:

  • A continuation of previously demonstrated research or scholarship interests.
  • A project leading to the development of new research or scholarship interests.
  • A project leading to papers on the development of new technology or clinical innovation.
  • The opportunity to refresh and update their research and scholarship, in the case of faculty whose primary responsibility has been administrative.

2. Curriculum, instruction and program development:
The objective in this area should involve a rethinking of the teaching-learning process. This category might include:

  • Developing or revising courses
  • Incorporating technology into teaching
  • Focusing education on the learner
  • Integrating co-op and classroom education
  • Developing interdisciplinary curriculum

3. Service:
This activity should result in meaningful connections beyond the boundaries of Northeastern. These strategic alliances would better connect the college or department to other academic institutions, government agencies, professional organizations, the local or regional community or the private sector.

4. Professional or Clinical Experience:
This type of activity should enhance the professional standing and capabilities of the faculty member, keep him or her abreast of current practices and aid in the adjustment to ever-changing academic demands in his/her field.

5. Travel and Study:
A leave may be granted for such objectives where it would be clearly advantageous to the person from the point of view of professional advancement and updating in his/her field.

6. Supplement to Grants:
A leave may be granted so that a faculty member can take full advantage of grants from governmental or private foundation sources.

7. Additional Criteria:
May be introduced as the need arises.

Sabbatical Report:

1. Upon returning to Northeastern University after his or her sabbatical leave, a faculty member must submit a written report of his or her activities during this leave to his or her department chair, the College Sabbatical Committee, and the Dean of the College. The report should include:

  • A review of what was done
  • Accomplishments including products and outcomes
  • Impacts or potential impacts of the work in the field

2. The faculty member is encouraged to make a presentation of what was accomplished while on sabbatical leave.
