IUHR - Providers Brochure for Hispanic Drug Abuse Treatment & Prevention

Providers Brochure for Hispanic Drug Abuse Treatment and Prevention

Project Summary
The major problem to be addressed through this project is the lack of knowledge about research findings on Hispanic substance abuse, substance abuse treatment and prevention among providers working with Hispanic populations. This will be accomplished through the development and dissemination of an easy-to-read brief of research findings on Hispanics pertaining to treatment and prevention. The brief will make research information more available to service providers. This is important since most providers generally do not have access to such information which is generally disseminated through scholarly journals.? The brief will be an 8-10 page hard copy and web-based document in English and Spanish with an attractive and accessible layout and graphics that will make the information available to substance abuse prevention and treatment service providers. The proposed project does not involve collecting original data but rather summarizing existing data and studies included in the National Strategic Plan on Hispanic Drug Abuse Research: From the Molecule to the Community funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) (Grant No. 045270). Outcomes expected are use of the document by service providers and a more informed service provider workforce on prevention and treatment with Hispanics. Success of this project will be measured by the following: (1) completion of the product to be developed; (2) dissemination through websites (SAMHSA, NIDA, RWJF, and others); and (3) wide distribution of printed version of the brief.

Project

Objectives
The objectives of the project are to: (1) develop, (2) produce, and (3) disseminate an informational brochure in English and Spanish on Hispanic drug abuse for service providers. We have obtained funding from SAMHSA to develop the English version of the brochure and are seeking funds from RWJ to produce a Spanish version and disseminate both versions. The information source for the brochure will be the National Strategic Plan on Hispanic Drug Abuse Research: From the Molecule to the Community funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) (Grant No. 045270). This Strategic Plan was developed under the direction of Dr. Hortensia Amaro, Distinguished Professor at the Bouve College of Health Sciences and Director of the Institute on Urban Health Research at Northeastern University (IUHR), in collaboration with the National Hispanic Science Network (NHSN) and other scientists in Hispanic drug abuse research. The Strategic Plan guides and informs the scientific agenda of Hispanic drug abuse research. The Strategic Plan has been distributed to the NIDA and RWJF leadership and will soon be disseminated to the scientific community through journal articles in special issue of the journal Drug Abuse and Dependence. Finally, we have developed and are now disseminating a similar briefing brochure targeting policy makers.
