In the Center of Community Service, Hilary manages the Civic Engagement Program (CEP) and the nuSERVES program and oversees other co-curricular service activities including Alternative Spring Break (ASB), Husky Volunteer Teams (HVT), one time service events and the bi-annual volunteer fairs. Prior to arriving at Northeastern in 2012, Hilary volunteered and worked with numerous schools and nonprofits across the country over the last 15 years. After graduating from college, Hilary served for two years as an AmeriCorps National Service Member, traveling around the country doing different types of service projects. She went on to teach GED classes to ex-offenders in Washington DC, manage a family literacy program for immigrant families, and worked for four years with the national early literacy organization Jumpstart. She also created and led the Boston AmeriCorps Alumni Board of Directors from 2008-2012. Hilary earned a Bachelors in Social Work from Westfield State College and a Masters in Nonprofit Management from the University of Maryland. In her free time, she enjoys reading, swimming, biking and traveling the globe.

Mark Este

Mark Este has served as the Assistant Director of the Civic Engagement Program since the summer of 2014. Prior to working at Northeastern, Mark worked in the Campus Compact National Office and served two years as an AmeriCorps*VISTA. Mark has a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and has completed the Institute for Non-Profit Management and Leadership at Boston University.

I'm a resource for: the history of civic engagement in higher education, public speaking, National Service programs, board relations, and anything related to the San Antonio Spurs.

Fun Fact: I have met US Senators Elizabeth Warren, Scott Brown, and Kelly Ayotte on different occasions in Logan International Airport.

Anna Sylvester

Anna Sylvester is the Assistant Director for Community Service Programs and Events. Anna has been working at Northeastern since 2010, and in this role with the Center of Community Service since July 2012. From 2010 – 2012, she worked as the Assistant to the Vice President of City and Community Affairs. Prior to working for Northeastern, Anna worked for the Boston City Council as a legislative aide and community liaison. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Northeastern in 2007, and her Master of Education, also from Northeastern, in 2012. She is a Husky through and through!

Daniel McKenna

Dan is a fifth year Environmental Studies major who is currently working at his second co-op in the Center of Community Service. In between his two co-ops at Northeastern, Dan was an intern at the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, where he spent most of his time exploring the woods and reading. Upon leaving seclusion, Dan returned to Boston to continue working on coordinating volunteer programs, as well as working as a research assistant for Dr. Berkey. In his spare time Dan likes to cook, play soccer and squash, and explore the best cheap eats in Boston.

Becca Berkey, Ph.D.

Becca began at Northeastern’s Center of Community Service in February 2013, and is now the Director of Service-Learning. Previously, Becca served as the Coordinator of Experiential Education in the Center for Engagement, Learning, and Teaching at Keene State. She has also served as a Course Director for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida and worked at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida facilitating leadership education and development initiatives on campus both in the curriculum and the co-curriculum. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Butler University, and a Master’s degree in College Student Personnel from Miami University.

Becca has a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from Antioch University New England. Her dissertation research was at the intersection of leadership, change, and environmental justice with a specific interest in the justice issues facing farmworkers. For this research, she collaborated with the Northeast Organic Farming Association, and the dissertation is titled Just Farming: An Environmental Justice Perspective on the Capacity of Grassroots Organizations to Support the Rights of Organic Farmers and Laborers. This research and collaboration is ongoing, and Becca is an active member of the Northeastern Environmental Justice Research Collaborative. In addition, she was published in a 2012 anthology on Environmental Leadership compiled by scholars at Duke University. She has served as an Instructor and Academic Dean for the Civic Leadership Institute and as a Site Director for two Civic Week programs (for Northwestern University), and believes wholeheartedly in all things related to positive social change. In her free time, she loves running and being active, spending time with her husband, Jonathan and stepson, Kaiman and trying new restaurants!

Lisa Roe

Lisa joined the Center of Community Service full-time as the Service-Learning Promotion & Assessment Coordinator in 2008. She currently manages the evaluation and assessment processes for the Service-Learning Program, oversees the Service-Learning Teaching Assistant Program, and supports the purposeful connections between faculty members and community-based organizations. Additionally, Lisa teaches a section of a service-learning course called Community Learning through the American Classroom program at NU.

A triple husky in the making, Lisa earned her BA in Sociology in 2008 as well as her MEd with a concentration in Higher Education Administration in 2011 from Northeastern, and now is pursuing her EdD in Higher Education Administration.

Barak Soreff

Barak graduated from Northeastern University in December 2014 with a B.A. in Sociology and a minor in Economics. Since Fall 2013 he has worked in the Center of Community Service with the Service-Learning Program in a variety of roles including Service-Learning Program Assistant, Service-Learning Teaching Assistant, and Service-Learning Team Manager. After completing his undergraduate studies, Barak now works with the Service-Learning Program in the role of Service-Learning Research Associate.

Brooke Schober

Brooke is a fourth year Cultural Anthropology student from Washington State and is currently working at her second co-op as the Service-Learning Program Assistant. She spent her first co-op in Nicaragua, where she worked at a community library in their after school program, developed and taught a digital literacy course and explored the beautiful country. After her abroad experience, she is excited to be working and learning with the Service-Learning program and the Center of Community Service to better understand her own community and support and encourage other students who are doing the same.

Fun fact: She is named after the brook trout.

Lisa is a fifth year English and journalism major and is completing her second co-op at the Center of Community Service as a Service-Learning Program assistant. For her first co-op, she worked at a start-up in the technology and trade publishing space. She is passionate about service that is centered on literacy, specifically, and loves to foster the same enthusiasm she has for reading and writing in those she works with. She plans to graduate in May of 2016 and hopes to study medieval literature and pursue a career in higher education. In her spare time Lisa can be found walking her dog, reading, or cooking!

David Draper

David is currently a graduate student in the College Student Development & Counseling Master’s program. As part of his degree requirements David will be working with Northeastern’s Center of Community Service and the Service-Learning Program team for the 2015-2016 academic year. David’s primary role on the team is to oversee and advise the Service-Learning Street Team. In addition to his role in the Center of Community Service, David also works as a Graduate Assistant for Residential Life here at Northeastern. David has a strong passion for working with student leaders and is really looking forward to the year ahead!

David received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a concentration on Substance Abuse & Addictions from Keene State College in2014 and will receive his Master’s degree from Northeastern in 2016.

Colleen Holohan

Colleen has 9 years of experience working with AmeriCorps programs and communities across Massachusetts. She came to Boston in 2003 to serve as an AmeriCorps*VISTA member with the Massachusetts Campus Compact (MACC). Based at Emerson College in downtown Boston, she worked on strengthening partnerships between the college and local community organizations.

Colleen also spent two years with MACC as the AmeriCorps*VISTA leader, training and supporting her fellow VISTA members serving on campuses across the state. In 2006, she joined the staff of the Massachusetts Promise Fellowship (MPF), a statewide AmeriCorps program focused on delivering mentoring, academic enrichment, and college and career readiness programs to young people through out-of-school time programming. Colleen served as a coordinator and manager with MPF, designing and delivering training, supporting and coaching AmeriCorps members, developing and managing evaluation systems, and developing and strengthening community partnerships. In her current role as Director, Colleen leads a team of staff in supporting 40 AmeriCorps members to deliver essential programs to young people across the Commonwealth.

Colleen is an advocate for individuals with disabilities and has served as a volunteer and mentor with Best Buddies and Partners for Youth with Disabilities. She is also a board member of Oil Heat Cares, a non-profit foundation that assists needy persons and organizations with the replacement of their oil heating appliances.

Colleen holds a BA in Social Science and Public and Community Service Studies from Providence College and an MA in Leadership and Non-Profit Management from Northeastern University.

Cecelia Auditore

Cecelia joined the Massachusetts Promise Fellowship in August 2008 as a fellow and joined the staff in July 2012. Cecelia is from Medford & Somerville and graduated from Emmanuel College with a BA in History and a minor in Political Science.

Upon graduation, Cecelia served as a Mass Promise Fellow at Mass Mentoring Partnership and Adoption and Foster Care Mentoring her second year. While serving at both sites, Cecelia learned a great deal about mentoring, evaluation, and youth development. Recently, Cecelia lived in Chicago where she worked at the University of Chicago in their development office, focusing specifically on their Urban Health Initiative.

Cecelia has her MS in Global Studies and International Affairs from the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern and is currently working towards her Master’s in Public Policy in the MURP program. She’s very excited to be back in Boston, working for a program that has contributed to both her personal and professional growth.

Lauren Currie

Lauren Currie has been with the staff of the Massachusetts Promise Fellowship since August 2015. Lauren is from Lockport, NY and graduated from Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio with a BA in Psychology and International Leadership Studies. 

Upon graduation, Lauren completed two years of AmeriCorps*VISTA service with Massachusetts Campus Compact, developing partnerships between universities and local education-based nonprofit organizations. During her second year Lauren had the opportunity to serve as the VISTA Leader for the program where she developed a passion for training development, program communication, and member and alumni support.

Jumpstart Program Staff:

Yelana Loiselle

Yelana Loiselle is the Site Manager for Jumpstart at Northeastern University since 2014. As Site Manager, Yelana is charged with recruiting and training 50 college student volunteers to build children’s language, literacy, and social skills so that they enter school prepared to succeed. She is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program at Northeastern and manages the site’s relationship with three preschool partners located in Roxbury and Mission Hill MA.

Yelana is a Jumpstart Alumni herself and served as a Corps Member and Team Leader at Emerson College from 2008-2011. Upon Graduation she taught 1st and 2nd Grade at the Edward W. Brook Charter School in East Boston and Mattapan.

Fun Fact: My favorite thing to do is stop on a run and read menus of restaurants I haven’t been to yet!
