Getting Started with the DRC
At the college level, seeking and receiving support and accommodations through the Disability Resource Center is a student-initiated process.
The student will:
- Meet the ADAAA definition of an individual with a disability;
- Be otherwise qualified to meet the admissions standards of the University, program requirements of the student's chosen major, and meet the standards for success and progress for each course the student attempts;
- Submit a complete Intake Packet, including the necessary disability-related documentation showing a current, substantial limitation in an academic setting according to Northeastern's Documentation Guidelines;
- Meet with a Specialist to Register with the DRC, if the student is approved for accommodations.
The DRC will:
- Review, by committee, students' Intake Packets in a reasonable and timely fashion (usual turnaround is 2-3 weeks from the time a complete Intake Packet is received);
- Communicate Documentation Review Committee feedback and results of review, as well as suggested next steps for the student;
- Provide reasonable and appropriate academic accommodations, as well as an assigned Specialist, to students whose documentation is approved for showing a current, substantial limitation for the student in an academic setting.
Please be aware that post-secondary (college) institutions are guided to provide reasonable accommodations in a reasonable timeframe for students with disabilities. We strongly encourage students to initiate the intake process with the DRC as soon as possible. Students benefit the most when he process and procedures have been completed proactively, particularly since services and accommodations are not retroactive.
