Mission Statement
The purpose of Delta Phi Omega shall be to foster unity among South Asian women, build community awareness, and gain a greater understanding of oneself and others. The sorority aspires to instill leadership traits, excel in all academic endeavors, to encourage an active relationship between the sorority and its respective university, and shall do so with the utmost compassion, dignity, and fortitude.

National History:
Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. was established on December 6, 1998 at the University of Houston by seventeen South Asian women who recognized the need for an organization to promote the advancement of South Asian women. Seventeen women from various backgrounds came together with the common goal of uniting women among the South Asian community. The Founders created the backbone of this sorority on the basis of the five pillars of Sisterhood, Respect, Loyalty, Honesty, and Friendship. They envisioned an organization that would highlight the diverse Indian culture through participation in community and social service projects
Through determination and perseverance, this vision evolved into a reality and as a result has become a highly sought after organization for South Asian women across the United States. With each passing year, Delta Phi Omega continues to grow and make its presence known not only within their respective universities but also within the community.
Delta Phi Omega has expanded to include 27 chapters and colonies, including the newest addition to the sisterhood, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The women of Delta Phi Omega understand that only through hard work, optimism, and a pure vision will the notion of sisterhood among South Asians prevail.
Chapter History:
The Founding Mothers of the Iota Chapter at Northeastern University, Anjali Jhaveri, Suruchi Ajmera, Gina Varghese and Nina Patel came together with the strong belief to start the first South Asian Interest Sorority straight into the college city itself – BOSTON! In the summer of 2002, the four founding mothers sat down together to decide, research and join a South Asian Interest Sorority.
“This was a challenging experience for us as well as an important decision to make, but in the end brought out the best out the best in each of us. We have formed stronger relationships; we have seen each other cry, smile and laugh; we are each other’s motivations. To us, this is not just a moment of excitement; this is a lifetime commitment for into sisterhood.
This all seemed like a dream, but soon it became a reality.

Northeastern University’s first South Asian Interest Sorority, Delta Phi Omega Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 25th, 2003. Along with the excitement, we each believed that through the strength of our bonds of sisterhood, we would be determined to stand together rather than standing alone. With building a steady foundation, we believe the sorority’s five pillars will keep us together through thick and thin. Honesty, Respect, Friendship Loyalty and Sisterhood are the five ideals we would like to serve both our South Asian community as well as the greater community of Boston. We strive to promote community service, leadership, and education to develop a greater continuation for the poor, the needy, and the less e fortunate. As we continue with our mission, our motivation is our future generation. Our philanthropy is children’s literacy and education. We believe that every child has a right to success. We are determined to make the difference in their lives…”
