Why Sorority Life?

Sorority membership at Northeastern University opens up the possibility to build new friendships and become engaged in the campus community. Women in NU’s Panhellenic sororities are active leaders on campus, give back to the Boston community and strive for academic excellence. Throughout a typical school year, sorority women at Northeastern complete 15 hours of community service, raise money for their respective philanthropies, attend semi formals and formals, and compete in Greek Week! College just isn’t complete without Fraternity and Sorority Life!

Still have questions or concerns? Check out Letters and Leis on Saturday, September 15th from 12 to 2 pm in the Freshmen Quad (*beside the Stetson dining hall) or True Life: I'm a Panhellenic Sorority Woman on Wednesday, September 19th from 6-8 pm in the Curry Ballrom. Both provide opportunities to learn more about involvement in a sorority and meet members of our sorority community.

Terms to Know

Rho Gamma: a recruitment guide who helps prospective new members through the Formal Recruitment process. These individuals are initiated members of recognized chapters who have disaffiliated from their particular organization for the period of recruitment. The membership of these individuals shall remain unrevealed until after the recruitment process is completed.

Potential New Member (PNM): someone participating in recruitment.

Legacy: a person whose parent or sibling is an alumna or active member of a national sorority. A legacy should be open-minded while going through recruitment, giving herself an opportunity to meet the members of all the groups before making a decision. A sorority is not obligated to extend a bid to a legacy; a legacy is accepted on her own merits.

Philanthropy: a service project or charity undertaken by sorority or fraternity chapters on the campus, community or inter/national level.

Bid: a formal invitation to join a sorority or fraternity.

New Member: a person who has accepted a bid to join a sorority, but has not been formally initiated.

Initiation: the formal ceremony at which the ritual is revealed to the new members and they become a full member of their fraternity / sorority.
