The Juhasz Collection
Although neither one of them attended Northeastern University, the late John and Susan Juhasz of Rhode Island bequeathed to the university a collection of 8,000 rare books in the arts, humanities and social sciences. A gift was also made so that the university could process the collection, art and other furnishings.
They decided to donate the collection to Northeastern after Law Professor Stephen Subrin introduced them to the university. The couple felt that Northeastern’s mission and culture reflected their values and would be the perfect choice for a permanent home for their vast collection.
While still in high school, John first began acquiring a large number of books. At Akron University, he worked at the Old Bookstore on Howard Street, where his book collecting intensified. After his retirement from teaching, he spent his time reading and amassing books, resulting in the impressive collection of high-quality art books, many of which are now out of print.
Today, the legacy of John and Susan Juhasz lives on in perpetuity at Snell Library where a reading room and lounge area are named in their honor.
