The Homestay Experience
ICDS provides a unique opportunity for N.U.in participants by arranging individual homestays, which allow students to fully integrate into the Costa Rican culture and practice their Spanish language skills. All host families are carefully screened and selected to provide a comfortable and safe living environment that students consistently rate the as one of the most formative and enjoyable aspects of their time in Costa Rica. Students often form such close relationships with their “familia Tica” (Costa Rican family) that they stay in touch long after they are back in the US.

After filling out a questionnaire, students are assigned to live with a Costa Rican family for their semester. Host families provide two delicious meals per day, laundry, a private bedroom, internet connection and a welcoming environment to support students during their time in San José.

Living with a host family is a great complement to the curriculum and experience here in Costa Rica. At the beginning of my time here, when I was anxious, lonely and homesick, my host family was there to talk with me and make me feel at home. I feel completely comfortable at the house and I love sharing and learning from my host family.”

Location

Universidad Latina (ULatina), ICDS´ institutional partner, is located in San Pedro, a student-focused neighborhood where participants will find various restaurant options, cafés, internet café, mall, roller skating, movie theaters, gyms, and other activities and attractions. All homestays are located a short distance from ULatina and ICDS offices, in the following neighborhoods: San Pedro, Curridabat, Vargas Araya, and Sabanilla. Students can either walk or take a ten-minute bus ride to ULatina.

Mail and Packages
Keep in mind that shipping to Costa Rica is normally a very expensive process, and can include additional import taxes on top of the original shipping fee, which the sender will be responsible for paying. If mailing letters or packages, it is generally safer and faster to use a private shipping company like FedEx or DHL.
