Visas & Passports
Note: This information is current as of March 2015. For updated information, please consult with your local embassy.
Participants with a US passport will need to apply for a Pre-Entry Clearance (PEC) or visa, through the British Consulate. Participants will apply for their visa under the Tier 4: (General) Student of the points-based system. This particular type of visa provides students with permission to volunteer in the UK.
Please see FIE’s Student Visa Guide for visa information under Tier 4 Criteria and Requirements on the bottom left side of the page. Students may also visit the UK Visas and Immigration website and this guidance on the UKVI website for more detailed information.
The N.U.in Pogram has created a supplement to the FIE Student Visa Guide process as well.
Participants will not be ready to submit a student visa application until they receive their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number in an email from FIE in early June. Students will not be issued this number until they have submitted all required documents to N.U.in and FIE. However, we recommend that students begin researching the process and gathering materials for their visa application beginning in mid-May. Obtaining a Tier 4 (General) Student visa will cost approximately $530 USD (as of 2/4/15). Students will collect a Biometric Residency Permit from the local post office within one month of arriving to the UK. Please note: As visa regulations are subject to change, it is important that students continue to check the UK Visas and Immigration regulations.
All N.U.in participants will need a passport. Those who do not already have a passport should apply for one as soon as possible. US Citizens can find more information at the US Department of State passport website. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the student's scheduled program end date.
