About NU Alert

Northeastern has implemented NU ALERT, a service that allows University officials to reach all students and staff with time-sensitive information during unforeseen events or emergencies. The system uses voice, e-mail, and text messaging to broadcast pertinent information and, when appropriate, provide directions to those in the affected area(s).

For each individual, NU ALERT can deliver one voice message to the phone numbers, e-mail address, and text message number you have provided us. NU ALERT is powered by BlackBoard Connect, which offers a set of emergency communications tools specifically designed for higher education institutions. The system is currently being used by nearly 200 colleges nationwide.

Any and all contact information you provide, such as home telephone numbers, cellular numbers, and e-mail addresses, may be used to notify you of an emergency or crisis that may affect you and/or the University community. Your emergency contact information may also be used to notify your designated emergency contact(s) of an emergency or crisis that may affect you and/or the University community. Examples of emergency or crisis situations include the following:

  • Terrorist attacks
  • On-campus crime and assaults
  • Natural disasters
  • Fires
  • Serious facilities issues
  • Extraordinary weather conditions

I heard that my classmate received a voice message from the University, but I did not. Why?
It is possible that we do not have your contact information loaded in NU ALERT, or it may be inaccurate. Please contact the registrar's office or use the student web portal to verify your information.

I heard that my classmate received a SMS (text) message on the cell phone from the University/College but I did not. Why?
To receive text messages, you will need to provide the university with your mobile phone number and you will need to opt in to the system by replying to the test message and typing "Y NUALERT". Once you have opted in to the system, you will not need to reply to future NU ALERT messages.

The only people who do not need to opt into the NU ALERT text message during the test are people whose providers are the following: T-Mobile, WesternWireless, US Cellular, Dobson, Cincinatti Bell, Cricket, MetroPCS, Qwest, Airadigm, Arch Paging, Conestoga Wireless, Cook Paging, Hickory Tech, Iowa Wireless, MCI Paging, Metrocall Paging, NPI Wireless, Pagenet Paging, SBC Paging, Skytel Paging, Union Telephone, Weblink Wireless Paging.

I received the message in my email inbox, but when I clicked the link to play the message nothing happened. Why?
You may not have a default media player like Windows Media Player or Quicktime installed. Download these players from www.microsoft.com or www.apple.com and install on your computer to listen to messages.

I received the message but I missed the information. What should I do?
While on the call, you can replay the message by pressing the star key (*) at the end of the message. You may also check your email to locate the link for that message.

I received the message but it kept looping/repeating. Why?
The system does its best to detect whether it has reached a live person or an answering machine. Sometimes loud ambient noises may cause the system to loop. If this happens, use the mute feature on your phone or move to a quieter location to prevent the message from looping or repeating.

I see a caller ID display of 617-373-7744. Who is this?
When the University sends a call out using NU ALERT, it will always display Caller ID information. Please save this number (617.373.7744) on your cell phone as a contact (e.g., "NU ALERT") to represent the University calling you.

What if I have a problem and need technical support. Who do I call?
If you experience any problems with this system, you should email NUAlert@neu.edu or call 617.373.7744.

Why did my parent/spouse/friend receive an NU Alert?
Because you listed this person and their phone number as your emergency contact.
