Housing and Residential Life

Tips for Current First Year Students

Tip 1: Do you know an upperclassmen with a better lottery number than you? They have the ability to pull you into their apartment. Simply give them your Roommate Registration Code and Password. When they sit down to make their room selection for Fall 2013, they can input your information into the system and book you into a room in their apartment.

Tip 2: Let's say you have a group of friends that you really want to live with... Here is what you should do step by step:

  1. Assemble the lottery information for all students in the group
    1. Lottery Number
    2. Scheduled Selection Time
    3. Roommate Registration Code
    4. Roommate Password
  2. Figure out who has the best lottery number and selection time
  3. Login to Housing On-Line up to 5 days prior to that date and time to view vacancies
  4. Plan to FILL an entire apartment as you are required to completely fill an apartment to select it on the first selection night for your class
  5. Plan on your first three choices as follows:
    1. 100% best case scenario of where you want to live
    2. 50% best case scenario of where you want to live
    3. Something that you can make work with all or parts of your original group
  6. Who ever has the best lottery number and selection time will be the person selecting for the group. Make sure this person knows how the group wants to be placed!
Tip 3: I want to live by myself what can I do... Here is what you should do step by step:
  1. Figure out what your selection time is based on your lottery number
  2. Login to Housing On-Line up to 5 days prior to that date and time to view vacancies
  3. Login on your selection day at your selection time and pick from what ever is available
Tip 4: I don't like what is left in the selection process what should I do?
  1. Contact housing@neu.edu via email or in person in Speare Commons and request to be assigned over the summer.
    1. Sometimes there are better spaces that open up over the summer, so you may actually be placed into a space you find more suitable.
      OR
    2. Fill out the Housing Placement form on Housing On-Line and we will place you in lottery number order over the summer.
