New green architecture program

The Faculty Senate on April 21 approved two new dynamic academic programs at Northeastern that will expand the fields of study in the key areas of urban architecture and computer and network security.

The new programs are a bachelor's of landscape architecture in the College of Arts and Sciences, and a Ph.D. in information assurance in the College of Computer and Information Science. Both programs will begin in the fall of 2011.

George Thrush, director of the School of Architecture, said the new program will build on the strengths Northeastern has in urban architecture. "This landscape program will focus on urban landscapes and all the sustainability that spring from those," Thrush said.

"There are a lot of landscape architecture programs in the United States, but we would be one of very small handful that are located in cities," Thrush added, "and this is where the future of landscape architecture is, we think. We hope this can be a leading program."

Meanwhile, the Information Assurance Ph.D. program will be led out of the College of Computer and Information Science and supported by the College of Engineering and the new College of Social Science and Humanities.

The program builds upon the Institute of Information Assurance and the Master of Science in Information Science program, which provides broad knowledge needed to make strategic decisions about information security issues, such as identity theft, computer viruses, and electronic fraud. This new program is expected to attract students interested in ensuring the reliability and security of cyberspace.
