Accessing Emergency Supports or Urgent Care

In addition to regular scheduled counseling and psychopharmacology appointments, UHCS offers emergency assessment and urgent counseling support.

Urgent Care Appointments
The UHCS Behavioral Health team offers same-day, urgent assessments. You may either walk-in or call UHCS to request an urgent, scheduled assessment. During these appointments, a Behavioral Health clinician will assess your mental health status, safety and well-being and arrange for appropriate care at UHCS or an off-site mental health facility if necessary.

What constitutes an urgent need?
If you feel that you are acutely distressed and in need of immediate support but not at risk of harm to yourself or others, this is considered urgent. Examples of an urgent crisis include feeling very distraught or upset over an unexpected setback or having distress that is extremely painful or keeping you from functioning as a student. Even if you are unsure about what type of support you may need, we encourage you to call UHCS at (617) 373-2772. When you call, alert the Patient Associate that you are seeking counseling support for an urgent matter. A Behavioral Health clinician will call you back promptly to help you assess your needs and arrange for appropriate support.

What constitutes a mental health emergency?
If you are in a life-threatening situation or if you feel that you are at risk of harm to yourself or others at any time, this is an emergency. If you have been injured or assaulted in any way you should also seek treatment immediately. In the event of an on-campus emergency, immediately call Northeastern Police at (617) 373-3333. In the event of an off-campus emergency, immediately dial 911. If experiencing symptoms of physical distress and unsure of your medical safety, please call 911 immediately.

For evening and weekend emergencies (after UHCS business hours)
If you are on campus, please call Northeastern Police at (617) 373-3333. If you are off campus, please call 911.
