The Continuing Education-CME Office provides non-credit training and continuing education courses for emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, such as EMT's and paramedics, as well as nurses, physicians, and other allied healthcare professionals in the community.
Continuing Education-CME is housed in the Department of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Education on the University's Brookley Campus. The Office has been designated as an authorized community training center (CTC) of the American Heart Association. The Office also provides other non-credit training courses of interest to the emergency response community. Below are the Center's main course offerings. Please

Designed for healthcare professionals whose daily occupation demands proficiency in the knowledge and skills of adult resuscitation. A current BLS card is recommended. Course is taught in two (2) consecutive eight (8) hour days.
Designed for healthcare professionals whose daily occupation demands proficiency in the knowledge and skills of pediatric resuscitation. A current BLS card is recommended. Course is taught in two (2) consecutive eight (8) hour days.
Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) represents a complete source of prehospital medical information for the emergent care of infants and children. Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, PEPP is an exciting curriculum designed specifically to teach prehospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children. The course is available in a one-day BLS format and a two-day ALS format. The two-day ALS format can include PALS renewal.
Designed for healthcare professionals and laypersons who may need to provide either basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) management in either children or adults, and who need the training to be able to provide two-rescuer CPR. The course can be taught in one (1) eight (8) hour day.
Designed for participants from a Provider course who attain Instructor Potential (IP) status. Course is a one day, eight (8) hour course which qualifies the participant to educate students at the Provider levels. These courses are by invitation only.
Designed for laypersons who have a need to know cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) management techniques for adults. This course is useful for elementary through high school students, neighborhood groups with primarily adults and spouses caring for adults at high risk for heart attacks or strokes.
Designed to provide practicing EMT Basics, paramedics and nurses with a specific body of knowledge related to the pre-hospital assessment and care of trauma patients. Course is taught in two (2) consecutive eight (8) hour days.
A skills approach in helping the student to intervene in any medical of traumatic emergency situation before emergency personnel arrive on the scene. Emphasis is placed on care of the airway, CPR, control of bleeding, splinting and bandaging, and overall management. Course is typically taught in five (5) consecutive eight (8) hour days.
Designed to assist those licensed EMS personnel who are in need of a DOT National Standard EMS Refresher class for recertification purposes. Call department for availability and costs.

Courses approved through the State of Alabama Department of Public Health and the Office of EMS and Trauma. The AHA Provider Courses are accredited and approved for the following hours of continuing education:
Physicians: Maximum of 16 hours (2-day course) or 8 hours (1-day course) in Category I AMA Physician’s Recognition Award;
Nursing: Maximum of 13.2 hours (2-day course) or 6.6 hours (1-day course) by the Alabama Board of Nursing;
EMS Providers: Maximum of 16 hours (2-day course) or 8 hours (1-day course) by the ADPH and NREMT;
Other Health Disciplines: Refer to your Association guidelines. Each person should claim those hours of credit that he or she actually spent in the educational activity.
Classes are subject to cancellations if a minimum number of applications are not received by our office on or before the class date. All efforts will be made by our office to notify you in advance if this should occur. If you are unable to attend the class you initially registered for, we will transfer you to another class. To transfer, please notify us at least one week prior to the class you originally registered for. Our office will transfer your registration only one time, and we will be unable to issue refunds after the transfer. Registration fee will be forfeited if cancellation or transfer request is not received prior to the scheduled course.
Participants must arrange for their own meals.
