The College is one of nine colleges and schools of the University of South Alabama. Founded on February 1, 1967, it is one of the largest colleges on campus offering a broad array of graduate and undergraduate programs. The College is nationally accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and our educator preparation programs in teacher education, educational leadership, counseling, library media, health and physical education are all approved by the Alabama State Department of Education. In addition to offering a doctoral program in Clinical and Counseling Psychology in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences, we are the only college in Alabama to offer master's and doctoral programs in Instructional Design and Development.

The primary administrative functions of the College are shared by the Office of the Dean, Academic Departments, and the Program Faculty. The Dean’s Office is comprised of several offices, including those of the Associate Dean for Academic and Fiscal Affairs, the Associate Dean for Professional Development and External Affairs, the Director of Graduate Studies and Research, and the Director of Assessment and Evaluation. The College has 57 full-time faculty members who are organized into three separate departments: Health, Physical Education, and Leisure Studies; Professional Studies; and, Leadership and Teacher Education. Each department sponsors several academic programs with which different faculty members are affiliated.

In addition to an organizational structure comprised of administrative offices, departments and associated programs, faculty within specific departments are also affiliated with cross-disciplinary teams that target emerging issues that have been identified as having the potential for significant impact upon the College. These Initiatives cover a broad range of critical issues and are developing some of the most innovative programs in the College today.
