Counseling - Exploring possibilities, developing personal potential, and bridging gaps.
We recognize the potential and uniqueness of each person and we welcome the opportunity to assist you.

How To Obtain Counseling and What To Expect

Call the counseling center telephone number (251) 460-7051 to make an appointment with a counselor. The secretary may ask you what type of difficulty you are experiencing, for example, depression or stress. Your answer helps her determine the counselor with whom you will receive an appointment. All counselors are trained to assist you in general counseling areas, but all have areas of interest and concentration which may best meet your needs. It is also OK not to specify your concern.
Some clients benefit after one or two sessions of counseling, whereas others decide to work further and schedule additional sessions. If a medication or psychiatric evaluation is warranted, the counselor will discuss this with you and refer you to an appropriate medical or psychiatric service provider.

We respect your right to confidentiality and will guard that right as we are permitted by law and our ethical standards. We will not divulge information you tell us except for the following exceptions: (a) you threaten to harm yourself or others, (b) you ask us to disclose information to a third party, or (c) we are ordered to disclose information by a judge or court order.

We adhere to the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, the American Psychological Association Code of Ethics and the National Board of Certified Counselors Ethical Code.

Counseling sessions are free to students and our office hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Occasionally, early evening appointments are scheduled for special circumstances.
The University of South Alabama provides equal educational opportunities to and is open and accessible to all qualified students without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, sex, or qualified disability, with respect to all of its programs and activities.
