Higher Education Day 2010

2013 Higher Education Day was one of the best ever. - The USA family showed up in force with almost 200 faculty, staff, students and alumni ready to discuss the importance of adequate funding for the state’s public universities with elected officials.

2014 Higher Education Day is scheduled for Thursday, February 27 in Montgomery, Alabama. This annual event brings more than 1,000 university faculty, staff, students and alumni from across the state to the capitol city to promote higher education and adequate funding for the State’s public universities.

Happy Fulford, Executive Director of USA’s Office of Governmental Relations says, “USA has always had a large crowd in attendance and we need a big group again this year. Our local Legislators look forward to seeing our students each year and enjoy meeting with them to hear their thoughts on higher education funding.”

The rally on the State House steps kicks off at 11:00 a.m. Immediately following, USA will host a luncheon for USA administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumni at the RSA Headquarters Building. The Southwest Alabama Legislative Delegation will join the group for lunch. In the past, the Governor and the Speaker of the House along with other special legislative guests have dropped by, and have been invited to join us again this year.

The Office of Governmental Relations and the Student Government Association (SGA) will provide buses which will depart from the USA Commons parking lot at 7:30 a.m., returning to Mobile no later than 5:00 p.m. Faculty and staff wishing to attend the luncheon and to reserve a seat on the bus, should email Governmental Relations at govrel@southalabama.edu.

Karen Peterson, Director of Center for Academic Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (CASLCE) encourages students wanting to sign-up to go to http://caslce.org/now/ to register. The SGA Attorney General, Danielle Watson shared, “It is really important for the faculty and students to get involved and learn the importance of how state funding really works. I look forward to being with the student body to represent South Alabama in a great way at Higher Education Day 2014!" If students need more information, they should contact Danielle Watson at 251/460-7191.
