The NIH Office of Laboratory Animals Welfare (OLAW) has recently expanded its requirements for the vertebrate animal section of NIH grants. OLAW has developed two documents outlining information that aids applicants in the preparation of the Vertebrate Animal Section and grant reviewers in their evaluation. The first document is a short summary of what the Vertebrate Animal Section (VAS) is. The second is a worksheet for review of the VAS available at : http://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/VASchecklist.pdf.
To further aid PI's in proposal development, in particular for those housing animals, the Department of Comparative Medicine has prepared suggested language to be used in writing the animal section. Please use the attached template. Additionally, this information should be incorporated, where applicable, upon submission of IACUC protocols since the approved IACUC protocol must be congruent with the grant application.
