Abeneefoo Kuo honor Society - This African American Honor Society consists of students who have shown outstanding abilities in academics, leadership, and service with a 3.0 or better GPA. For the years 2002-2005 the group was inactive. The honor society was reinstated in February of 2006 and has been growing strong. This past spring semester there were over 30 USA students inducted with a total of 150 guests present.
African American Student Association (AASA) - The African American Student Association is one of the most well-known and most influential student organizations on USA’s campus. The organization was designed to be a strong supportive structure not only for African Americans but for all students on campus. AASA provides in-depth learning experiences of Black History and opportunities for students to excel in academics and leadership positions.
African American Student Association Gospel Choir - Is an ensemble of approximately 30 students from USA. The AASA choir builds confidence and self-esteem in the students through their many performances. The AASA choir is also an opportunity for students to network.
Dr. Martin Luther King Annual Celebration – OMSA, Jaguar Production, and the African American Studies department, and the USA family host the annual MLK program. For the past two years the event has been held at the Saenger Theatre in downtown Mobile. The goal of the program is to educate the students, faculty and staff, and the Mobile community on “Keeping the Dream” of Dr. King alive.
Men of Excellence (MOX) - The program began March of 2006. The sole purpose of this organization is to ensure, encourage, and motivate African American men at USA to establish and use leadership skills. The program focuses on class scheduling, career opportunities, etiquette, and student involvement on campus.
Minority Preview Day – The purpose of the Minority Preview Day is to exposed high school and junior college minority students to the University of South Alabama. This event is held during the spring and fall semesters.
Showcase of Excellence - Showcase of Excellence is a program that acknowledges students of color at USA for their academic achievements. This past year there were 200 guests present for this event. During the showcase, there is always a dynamic speaker that presents words of strength and encouragement to the students. Parents’ are always impressed with this event because they see the university taking time to recognize their child or children. It is truly a family oriented event.
Spectrum and Unity - A student-run, community-based organizations open to persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions for the education and support of the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender/queer/ally (GLBTQA) university community in the areas of activism and/or confidential support. We proudly represent individuality, diversity, and equality. We offer a safe-space to freely socialize and discuss issues affecting our lives, attempting to educate the university and community at large on matters of discrimination, harassment, and human rights. University of South Alabama, National Pan-Hellenic Council - The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc., is currently composed of nine (9) International Greek Letter Sororities and Fraternities (Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho, Sororities, and Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta, Fraternities). NPHC promotes interaction through forums, meetings, and other mediums for the exchange of information and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.
