The University of Kentucky's impact extends far beyond the borders of the Commonwealth: UK students and faculty increasingly "see globally."
“Engaging in international projects has always been a core aspect of UK’s global research enterprise, providing access for international students to seek their degrees at UK, allowing opportunities for our students to study abroad and immerse themselves in different cultures, and creating opportunities for faculty exchanges that enrich the academic and cultural fabric of our campus," said UK President Eli Capilouto.
The number of international students enrolled at UK, as well as the number of UK students enrolled in education abroad programs has increased over the past two academic years. Through Education Abroad at UK, students can participate in high-quality study abroad, research abroad and intern abroad programs, ranging in length from a couple of weeks to a full academic year. These programs are offered during each term, including winter and summer intersessions.
“We not only create diverse opportunities for global experiences, we also promote the involvement of UK faculty and students in the international community of scholars to investigate and solve global problems,” said Susan Carvalho, associate provost for international programs.
UK International Center (UKIC) supports faculty's international work by serving as a resource center for the university’s international linkages. The center supports the development of agreements and partnerships with universities, foreign governments, NGOs and U.S. government agencies abroad.
The global reach of UK’s faculty links students to many opportunities for international projects, such as education initiatives in Guatemala and Ghana, health care rotations in Israel and India, agriculture work across southeast Asia and business and engineering exchanges in Europe, among many others. Across all majors and careers, UK faculty and the UK International Center lead the way in building pathways for students to grapple with real-world global challenges, broadening their horizons in ways that apply directly to their degree programs.
The UK Confucius Institute, housed under the UK International Center, is a gateway to China for the university and the Commonwealth, and serves as the conduit for UK’s China initiatives, facilitating a range of China exchange programs across the campus and beyond.
