HPC Getting Started: Can I Use the Supercomputer (How do I get an account)?
Who can use the UK HPC Resources?
Any regular faculty member or postdoc at the University of Kentucky, or at any research institution in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, may apply for an account to use the UK Supercomputer. Designated partners of the Supercomputer Center from outside of the Commonwealth may also submit proposals. (Currently there are no such partners.) Others researchers may qualify for an account when collaborating with a Principal Investigator who is qualified as described above.
How do I get an account?
The HPC accounts cluster are link blue accounts, just like the ones used for Exchange email, MyUK, and many other services. Do one of the following to apply for Supercomputer access:
- Print the Computing Accounts Request Form (PDF) and fill it out. Under the heading Other accounts / services write HPC. Your dean, director, or the Security Liaison for your college or department must sign the form. Deliver, fax, or email it to the IT Service Desk.
- Your dean, director, or the Security Liaison for your college or department may email all of the necessary information to the IT Service Desk.
Note that accounts are granted to one person only and no other person may use the account. No exceptions will be made. Do not share your account with anyone.
Currently there are no hard limits on total amount of CPU time accrued, but researchers must share the facilities, and jobs may be limited to ensure that each one gets a fair share. Allocations are likely to be instituted in the future.
Users of the UK HPC and other UK Information Technology (UKIT) facility must abide by University and IT policies. See the UK Information Systems Policies page for more information. Failure to abide by these policies could result in the suspension of your computing privileges.
