Restriction Process

UF Housing and Residence Education is required to monitor DHNet Internet Services for any activity that is in violation of the DHNet Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) or the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). When a violation is detected, the user is immediately restricted from accessing the Internet with access limited to UFL.EDU websites only. Additionally, the user will receive an email message from the system and their web traffic will initially be redirected to our resolution page at http://p2p.dhnet.ufl.edu. Please note that if an academic website is needed that is not hosted on the UF campus, the user may need to visit an on-campus computer lab to gain access to the website.

The length of the user’s restriction is incumbent upon several variables which can be seen below. These, however, do not necessarily include the wide array of variables that could affect the resident’s restriction length. Steps other than these may need to be taken.

Levels of Restriction

NOTE: The timeframes listed below only begin once the user visits http://p2p.dhnet.ufl.edu, reviews the DHNet Acceptable Use Policy, and clicks on the “I Will Comply” button.

THE FIRST TIMEa user has an alleged AUP violation his, or her, port will be disabled for 30 minutes. After completing the required steps of acknowledging the violation and making the necessary modification on the user’s computer, the restriction will be automatically removed. The Office for Conduct and Community Standards (OCCS) will take no action on the student’s official record.

THE SECOND TIME a user has an alleged or AUP violation, the restriction will last for 120 hours (5 days) from the same confirmation time period (+/- 30 minutes). After completing the required steps the restriction will be automatically removed. The Office for Conduct and Community Standards will take no action on the student’s official record.

THE THIRD TIME the user has an alleged or AUP violation, the restriction will be in place until the user meets with a staff member from the Office of Conduct and Community Standards. During this meeting, an extended restriction of DHNet Internet Services may be placed based on the resolution of the case. In addition to this, other action may be taken regarding the student’s official record held by OCCS.

NOTE: The descriptions above assume that the violation did not involve a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act or DMCA. These are external complaints involving copyrighted material and are typically attached to a lawful “cease and desist” order. DMCA violations are all handled as a third time incident or Level 3 violation and will require a meeting with the Office of Conduct and Community Standards for a final ruling. Any further violations of this sort will also be treated as a Level 3 violation and handled by OCCS.

The Office for Conduct and Community Standards

The Office for Conduct and Community Standards handles ONLY Level 3 DMCA and AUP violations. Please do not contact OCCS for questions about your Level 1 or Level 2 violations. Instead, you may contact the DHNet@Home Support Program, click here for our contact information.

The OCCS is located in the Main Housing Office adjacent to Beaty Towers on the corner of 13th Street and Museum Road, ( click here for a map of this location) The hours of operation for OCCS are not necessarily the same as the hours of operation for the Department of Housing and Residence Education.

Monday through Friday 8AM – 5PM (excluding State Holidays and University closures).
