What do Industrial & Systems Engineers do?
Industrial engineers find ways to eliminate wastefulness in production processes. They devise efficient ways to use workers, machines, materials, information, and energy to make a product or provide a service. They are primarily concerned with increasing productivity through the management of people, methods of business organization, and technology. To maximize efficiency, they carefully study the product requirements and design manufacturing and information systems to meet those requirements with the help of mathematical methods and models. They develop management control systems to aid in financial planning and cost analysis, and design production planning and control systems to coordinate activities and ensure product quality. Industrial engineers also design or improve systems for the physical distribution of goods and services and determine the most efficient plant locations.

ISE’s research strengths are concentrated in operations research, its applications and implementation, with a strong emphasis in optimization, algorithmic development and data analysis. Applications can be found in a variety of areas, including the optimization of transportation, logistics, manufacturing, military, healthcare, biological, biomedical, financial, energy, telecommunications and infrastructure systems. Much of the applied work is centered around the six centers and labs housed in the department.
ISE faculty are widely acclaimed by their peers, garnering a range of distinctions. U.S. News and World Report ranked the graduate program in Industrial and Systems Engineering 12th among all institutions in the Industrial/Manufacturing category by in the 2014-2015 ranking. The ranking was 8th among public institutions.
