Educator Certification: GACE

Educator Preparation Programs (EPP) in the College of Education have been continuously accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) since 1955. EPP are also reviewed and approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GAPSC).

Students in all EPP must pass the Georgia Assessment for the Certification of Educators (GACE®) exams to satisfy program admission requirements and to qualify for an institutional recommendation for certification upon program completion. GACE Content or Pedagogical Knowledge Assessment Tests must be passed for program completers to be recommended to the GAPSC for initial certification.

NCATE and the GAPSC define an Acceptable pass rate for GACE tests as "80% or more of the professional education unit's program completers pass the academic content examinations required by the GAPSC for certification." Based on the quality of student cohorts and historical successes with respect to GACE pass rates, the College of Education uses a benchmark of 90% to indicate success. The mean GACE pass rate in the period 2009-2013 ranged from 97%-99%. EPP completers continue to consistently meet and exceed the threshold set by NCATE (80%) and the College of Education (90%).
